Help with a dining table and chairs choice

Slowly I am redoing my house. I have all new grey wood floors and had added some new accent pieces. I want to get a new dining room table and chairs but am not sure if I should look at driftwood, black /cement table, wood.....please suggest the direction I should proceed. The cabinet on the side filled with moments of my life will eventually be replaced but I want to start with a big table and then add 4 of the same chairs and two different chairs for the ends.

Of the 2 pieces of furniture in last photo - which is added, to stay?

I don't mind your current set, which adds warmth, seems ok with rug.

    Nice room.

Like the unadorned look of your current table and chairs.

Before investing a huge amount of money in a new table, you might consider going ahead and changing the seat covers on the four chairs you intend to keep to add your favorite color to the room. It may well be that doing that and getting a couple of "captain's chairs" for the two ends is something you like.

The way these seats are made, you could probably replace them as a DIY project:

Remove the black seats you have now from the chairs -- but keep them to keep your options open to reuse them later if you so choose.

Then cut new plywood boards (or have them cut) the same shape as the original seat boards.

Then add a cushion/pillow atop the plywood boards.

Then, use upholstery tacks or a stapler (such as is intended for installing insulation) to attach a new fabric you like to cover the seats.

Too much of a project for me Suezbell.....I think I will keep the table and then just purchase new chairs. I love the deep blue color for the 4 chairs around the table but should I use another color for the two end captain chairs? Or a print?

Keep the table. Just replace head chairs for contrast. I would remove the tall curio. Update lighting always helps. I’m doing the same in my home.

I am going to keep the table and buy 6 new chairs. should the chairs be all the same colors? I sass a navy striped chair for the end chairs and either solid dark grey or solid navy for the other 4 chairs. What's the best way to go with that idea?

    I like your dining set.

It would be so easy to recover those chair seats.

Can you turn them over and see if the seat tops just screw in?

Take a photo to show us.

We can tell you just what to do to recover them.

I recovered my dining room chairs and it was a snap.

And now there are scads of instructions online, too.

It would be a shame to discard those perfectly wonderful chairs that match your table in style, size and proportion, and that is not at all easy to find.

Here is a picture the seat.....I did recover them already. I hate the spindles in the back....makes them look out of place in my more contemporary home.

    I wanted something like below.

I've had a rocking chairs with round vertical spindle backs -- not comfortable without a great deal of padding. Because of that, and even though these dining room chairs look good, keeping the table but replacing the chairs would probably be a good idea -- likely the choice of all that sit in them for an extended time.

A caution about the dark blue chair in your second pic that you're considering: the back legs are splayed out and potentially a stumble hazard.

I'd also caution about an upholstered solid back on a dining room chair for a couple of reasons:

Moving chairs with upholstered backs usually requires two hands or sliding the chair across the floor.

Unless you expect your family members and guests to grasp the chair by the legs to move it to rise from the table and/or to push the seat back beneath the table, moving the chair will require grasping upholstered areas with hands that may still have some food residue on them (such as from holding buttered bread -- stain potential). Still, if your preference is an upholstered back, go for it.

Just FYI: The oak rocking chair I'm now using has wide flat back verticals requiring very little in the way of padding to be comfortable.

I wonder what a good upholsterer could do with your chairs.

Even if you don't sew, you might see if you can find someone that does so for a fee.

If you are having difficulty finding replacements within your budget, perhaps you could add to the back of your chairs the fabric/chair equivalent of a (padded) back brace -- a "pillow" wrapped only around the round vertical back torturers of (otherwise really attractive) chairs and held in place with velcro.

Those spindles are so uncomfortable ....I really want to look for new upholstered chairs. We sit at this table no more than twice month...really not used much . I desperately need some color in this room...

Here is the artwork I would like to use to compliment the room.

the floors are very pretty. what are they?

Should all the chairs match? Or can I do 4 grey chairs and then 2 navy on the ends?

    My floors are grey plank

Not to argue anything, but is the bombe fitting in with rest of house any more than the chairs?

In eclectic types, don't they add funk to an item by painting it a modern color - what about chalk paint a bright-ish citron [shown in chair way above]? nice with grey rug?...

    1. A "big" table will want six side chairs and two end chairs.
    2. Do not restrict yourself to gray everything. Wood works with gray. Color works with gray. You need both color and wood to tone down the gray. An area rug with color, art on the walls, upholstered pieces with colorful (even muted colorful) fabric and several colorful accessories will brighten the place and give it personality.
    3. Gray tends to be a more casual color when used on the floor. The big china cabinet is a more formal piece, and you may need to arrange its contents in a more casual style if you intend to keep it.

Everdepz - I would like to replace that bombe chest for sure, Not sure what to even look at for the area. Maybe I can paint it black until I find what I want to do,

I definitely need color felizlady....my house is so drab. Maybe add a few printed chairs to my choice of new chairs. Pier One has some great printed chairs on sale. I have a tendency to go simple all the time,,,grey, navy...no pizzaz......so make your suggestions but no citron color......not a fan of that shade of yellow

    Thank you

Please don’t replace those chairs with pier one chairs.

How about if I just replace the 2 end chairs with a colorful print chair? Can I paint the bombay chest ? Felizlady...how do I rearrange items in the big china cabinet in a more casual way? I am confused.

Would a chair like this work for the two end chairs?

hm... if you want to blend with rest of home you said is contemporary, maybe not.

Solid navy? Is it important that the legs of the chair match the table. Can they be a darker wood?

I think new houzzers should come over!! This would seem color of bombe, but is bombe great with that set, or rest of house, we've wondered.

Some of these would seem classic, with your table, too? Warm rust/brick [not with current rug]…. do you like terra cotta tile rooftops? :)

In the photo, the contents of the big china cabinet seem to be all decorative pieces.....arranged as a display. They are not pieces that will be used for a dinner party. If you have a set of "good china", I would store it in the hutch as if it is always ready for use. Remove half of the decorative pieces to give the hutch a less frantic arrangement: there is so much to look at that the contents seem to vie for attention with no place for the eye to rest. Placing the set of china in regular stacks of plates, salad plates, bowls and cups and saucers will provide a quiet zone among the competing colors, shapes and styles of the decorative pieces. Placing wine and water glasses, and a few other crystal items in the cabinet will also reduce the color-and-shape conflict. You have a very interesting collection of pieces on display, but too much of one thing can just be too much.

I don't have good china anymore. I got rid of all the formal stuff....I live in South Florida and my entertainment style is very casual. Many of those pieces are "old" and yes, I need to just store them or give them away....no one wants collectables anymore. I can add my wine and other drink glasses to this cabinet to try to make it less of a display.

The bombay chest in the picture will either be given away or maybe I will try to paint it.

As for my dining room, I really don't want all the chairs to match..thinking the side chairs perhaps a dark navy than then add the 2 end chairs in a brighter color and maybe the citron yellow as suggested in the start of this conversation.

I very much appreciate all the comments made

I deleted citron [seemed a light version of]…. it would seem fresher and more modern than navy. Navy and grey ok, but to me sooo conservative, especially for a room that's apart from the others and could be more striking with color, and also softer like your art...

Funny just noticed you find the spindles uncomfortable. To me the rug doesn't do much for your art pieces. If you want bit of green, try less saturated than citron, and more of a sea color..

Saw your photos - lovely! what kind of teal chest is it? interesting.

The teal chest I found in a little furniture store. We are using it as a liquor cabinet as it has 2 shelfs with ample space to put our bottles
What do you all think about adding some hot pink pillows, flowers, and nick nacks?
    Either that or bright yellow

You have a whole china closet full of knickknacks. Please don't add any more.

Please talk to someone who upholsters chairs. To create a cushion that works on the inside of those spindles would not be rocket science. Recover the 2 end chairs in a solid, and have some quality cushions created for the side chairs. If the seats are the right size for your family, than have them recovered in the same fabric. You can do something fun with a modern print fabric on the side chairs to coordinate with the solid cushions on the backs and seats of the end chairs. If you purchase a Parsons' style chair, you will be replacing them in 5 years or less. They sit like a quilt frame, wood edges and sunk in the middle...but even worse the legs spread because there is not 4 spindles to hold them. They are made to create a consumer. One who never owns a chair so long they get sick of them. And it is sad. The ones that spray out first are the ones purchased that have those curvy legs, ready to spread in their direction, away from under the seat.
