For starters I would add a settee under the windows in a light fabric, possibly a Sunbrella fabric, as I am sure that this entry gets lots of wear. I would then move the area rug more to the center, align with the settee. It is quite a dark entry so the lightness of the fabric will soften the room. Possibly add an end table with a lamp on it in the corner can help as well. An entry is part of your home as well...don't treat it like a step-child but embrace it as well! Good luck.

Window treatments will do a lot to freshen the entry. I would get rid of the tiny table because it serves no purpose. You could have a console table or a cabinet under the windows on the left wall (as you enter) with a lamp on it.
The hall tree is necessary, but maybe the style is too modern?
I would get a larger rug in a slightly darker color which will not show dirt that may be walked inside. Put a rough rug outside for to help keep shoes and rug clean.
When/if you have winter weather, keep a boot tray handy for muddy or snowy shoes. A tray on the console table would be handy for wet gloves.
