Those look irresistible even to me to climb on :-) Does he have a more appealing place to climb? Maybe there's a wall in the family room or garage you can turn into a cool climbing area. Not necessarily vertical, but horizontal climbing is fun too. My daughter loves rock climbing.

use semi gloss paint, just in this area. it will be easily washable. yes, there will be a gloss difference but being low it won't be as noticable.

You could find something tall and decorative to put on top of the ledge and then screw it down so that the kiddos cant make it over the top and cant clear the path to make a way. Or do what I would do and invest in a gallon of touch up paint and let them go at it.

Melissa - Its interesting that the assumption is she isnt parenting. Maybe she parents from a different prespective then yours but my guess is that she still parents her kids.

Thank you all for all your various advice:)...its more than just the climbing I think its just an easy accessible surface that will likely show dirt as time goes on. I will try the semi gloss paint and if not some decorative knick knack...

You get get one or two decorative baskets to put there. That would give you a place to put the stuff you stack on there and also stop your kids from climbing.
