Is this a place you own? or are renting? If you are planning on replacing the floors, don't buy anything until they're finished. A hardwood floor is like a neutral while a brown carpet has a distinct look.

But really, you can' go wrong with paring off-while with the brown rug. Think about bringing in as much texture as possible if you are keeping to a very neutral palate.

Brown is a neutral. You can do whatever you want. It can go monochromatic, with beiges and tans, or you can stick with warm “fall” colors, or you can make it stand out with accent colors like sky blue, pink, lime green, or Turquois. What vibe do you want the room to convey?

I like Suki's second picture very much. The light blue and white lifts the brown beautifully.

Can you paint the walls or do you have to stick with the cream? A good option with cream is to combine brown with rusty / orange colours. Olive or lime highlights would work with that.

And there's nothing wrong at all with using different depths of brown for a monochrome room.
