Do not change out the chairs if you decide to select an Oriental rug. Give the table a 1/4 turn, swag the chandelier over or have the electrical box moved.

These rugs below are from Overstock. Don't know what size rug you need. These prices are for 10x 14 so the price will likely be half of these numbers.

    What are we voting on?

but I really want to change the style with modern chairs, also I love a capiz chandelier .
maybe will add white drapes to give a little depth to Windows

You have to wonder why the light was not centered in the first place. There might be some structure in the ceiling preventing it. Great advice from BeverlyFLADeziner

when we renovated, the light was in the center of room, we didn't think that it was not gonna be aligned with the table, we can just move it over a little.

The items you seem to favor don't complement one another. Capiz chandelier is a trendy that is so over. If you want to go MCM then embrace that look totally but even that is a trend that works best in a contemporary home.

    Thank you for advice!
since that chandelier look won't work what would you recommend?
I am also changing wall color to white.

My house is very bright with lots of natural light, the picture doesn't do its justice

Celia, I get the sense that you don't have a clear vision for this room. You have nothing in any ideabooks, so we can't get a real sense of what you want either. You've shown us only one wall of what looks like a pretty traditional house, so we're not really able to give much advice.

Browse dining rooms on Houzz and save to an ideabook the ones you really love. Then give us photos of the space from all four directions so we can see the other areas it relates to as well.

This is another angle, its not a big house.
I am updating other room also, that furniture will go down to basement were we have a family room.

I'm just keeping the large brown cabinet, thought I can work around it, and add a little modern flare.
I definitely want to keep table but change chairs
  • 7 years ago

Have you considered painting that huge big cabinet to match the kitchen cabs? Paint the table a fun color and add clear lucite chairs and a new light.

Sounds like a good idea, but not in afraid to paint the cabinet, got it from Restoration Hardware, it was not cheap! I'm afraid it won't look right .
and what color to paint table??

Thanks for the extra photos. Below is what you're proposing: your original table with white shell chairs, Persian-style rug, and capiz chandelier. If you want to go modern, I think you can do better. This look doesn't blend well with your traditional chest right next door.

I agree! that chest will move it down stairs to basement !
I like the idea of the acrylic chairs and paint the big cabinet white. and maybe table. found this ideas

I didn't know you intended to paint.

Are you kidding, Colleen? That's a fantastic rug and a traditional middle eastern pattern. Nothing southwestern about it (if you want an actual southwestern rug, you'd want a Navajo rug, which look entirely different).

OP, I think your red rug will be amazing, you just need to make some adjustments to colors elsewhere in the room. Keep the furniture wood (oh god do not paint why do people always suggest painting good wood furniture??), paint the walls (warm white or pale gold look really good with red tones), and get a more traditional chandelier- the MCM ones don't really jive with oriental rugs, in my opinion.

What if I just paint table in white and get the clear chairs, with a crystal chandelier will a red rug work?

I think all you need to do to make a red oriental rug work is to change the wall color to a warm white or other subtle, warm color. My parents have a very dark (walnut?) table and red-dominant rug in their dining room with medium-dark wood floors, pale gold walls (formerly white) and white trim and it's stunning. Going for the same vibe in my own dining room (hope I can inherit/afford to buy a huge oriental rug soon).

OH, and I totally forgot to actually answer the question about the SIZE of the rug - it should be big enough that when you pull out a chair, the chair stays entirely on the rug (to avoid chair legs getting caught when people are seating themselves). Position your chairs around the table accordingly and take measurements.

I'm open to any style rug as long as it works with white walls white table and acrylic chairs
