Should I remove this bedroom niche?

We are doing a cosmetic remodel of a house we just bought. inside the bedroom is a niche or cut-out (I'm not sure what you would call it.) its dimensions are: 23 in deep, 50.75 in wide, 7 feet tall.

It bugs me for the following reasons:

- It's off center. This bothers my sense of symmetry. the bed is centered on the opposite wall, and it would be impractical to move the bed over, off center, so it's lined up in front of the niche.

- Its expensive to fill with furniture. We would either have to buy a new dresser that fits in it, but even so it would still look funky. ideally I'd put a piece of built-in furniture there to fill up the whole space, but that will cost thousands (according to the quotes we got.) Plus it's not quite wide enough to put a really attractive built-in, it's basically as wide as our tv.

- It's an inch or so taller than the closet next to it, which looks weird to me! especially if we were to out a built-in there.

We want to make a choice now. Can anyone think of something else to do besides remove it and make the wall flat across? We thought about widening it but I'm not sure if that's possible.

(please excuse the pile of clothes in the picture!)

thanks!
