I guess I figured maybe someone has had experience or has seen a great fixture I haven’t found yet.

I’m also not saying I wouldn’t use an electrician but that also leaves more holes in an old ceiling that will not be easy to camouflage due to the ceiling texture.

Look for fixture with large ceiling base plate. It can hide offset junction boxes. However, you might have trouble getting styling you want. I have done this for a couple of clients and it just requires knowing size you need and hunting styling.

If you go to a lighting store, they have sources for building your own look. You can choose the baseplate, and pendants to create your own look too. I did this on a high end home for a dome ceiling over a curved staircase that was tricky to work with. I will post a photo.

Here is the custom look we created. We could hang each globe to the exact length we wanted so a nice pattern showed from inside and outside.

Not an electrical pro -- purely DIY -- but FYI, it can be done and, I believe, there are You Tube DIY vids that could help you learn how. Would not recommend you do this as a DIY project w/o a good amount of research.

Caution: when involved with a DIY electrical project, be very certain the breaker serving that fixture or outlet is turned OFF.

You could create a dropped ceiling "box" on your ceiling to move your overhead light fixture where you want it and paint it the same color as your ceiling.

Using 2"x4" boards, you'd create a frame attached to the ceiling that is BOTH centered over where you actually do want your light to hang AND encloses/hides the existing box. For strenth/support, you'll need to be sure you nail this frame to ceiling joists -- not just the sheet rock on the ceiling.

[If the light is for over an island, you could frame an area the approximate shape of the island but smaller.

You'd need to add a 2"x4" cross board so you could attach a new box for the overhead light fixture to the side of it at the exact location from which you want your light fixture to hang.

With a new length of the same house wiring used for the existing overhead box and wire nuts and electrical tape, you'd extend the wire from the old box to the new box.

You'd then finish building the box by adding the board/panel that will serve as the ceiling.

Then finish your new ceiling box -- paint it or wrap it in paneling matching your cabinetry before hanging your light.

You'll need to know how what material you're going to put on the bottom/exposed part of your ceiling box before you attach the electrical box to those cross pieces -- sheet rock or paneling -- so you know the space you need to have the electrical box extend beyond/below the framing.
