When to transfer my cuttings?

So I’m a rookie when it comes to this stuff, I’ve never tried to root a plant before in my life! That being said, while pruning my hydrangea and smoke bush I decided to try it out figuring ’what the big deal, I’d be throwing the trimmings away anyway’? So I took about 4-5” cuttings of each, took almost all the leaves off and on hydrangea I clipped the remaining leaves in half crosswise. I scraped the bottom coating off, and dipped in root hormone then stuck it straight into the ground under a tree that allowed dappled sunlight. It was very hot and humid, and we got a good mix of rain and sun..but that was about 3 weeks ago...and now it’s getting cooler outside..so I wonder when do I transfer to a pot, and how do I do so?

ALSO, let me say that idk if they’ve even formed roots yet!! But some of the cuttings leaves have died, and some look alive, like they’ve never been cut at all. So I assume those are the ones that would need a transfer...is it too early? Will they die from the cooler temps (low in the 40’s)?

AND they’re not covered...I don’t have anything to cover them with.
