They appear to resemble a type of scale but I am not familiar with a species that remains that flat or attaches to the plant in that manner. But there are scores of different species so not inclined to rule that out.

I would suggest you take a sample of a branch or stem with these creatures attached into your county extension office for an accurate ID. They will also be able to tell you how to treat and when. If it is scale, timing is key!!

Those are katydid eggs. Since they are deposited lengthwise on the branch and do not girdle it, there is usually no damage from the egg deposits. The hatched nymphs do eat leaves and fruit.

You guys are right, I looked it up and it looks exactly like that! I've seen a good number of katydids in the area but never realized that is what their eggs look like and why they would be in my cherry tree since I have never seen one in it before.

Katydid eggs, as has been said. Katydids are considered a minor pest of fruit trees, unless the population is high. Everybody knows what a katydid is, right?
