ID unknown bug/pest on cherry tree

last modified: 7 years ago

Was looking at my cherry tree today and I saw these large gray shelled things on one of the branches, what can It be?

I thought it could be scale, but I have never seen any that look like this...if it is what kind of scale is it?

There is a bit of damage on the branch as well but not sure if it's because of this or maybe a bug was eating the branch and then laid these eggs??.

They are hard, gray and smooth, look identical from both sides.

I know it is alive because if I try to break it, it cracks like a shell and seems empty apart from some yellowish liquid inside (not sure whether that is just the bugs blood, or liquid in the egg, or sap from the tree in it for some reason.

Anyone know what this is?

It would be good to know so I can figure out how to treat it in the future if necessary. There was about a dozen on 1 branch which I manually removed.

I have attached a few pictures from different angles and one that I crushed.

Thanks for the help!
