Layout ideas to open up 70s kitchen.

my current kitchen is very closed off. would love any suggestions for a new layout. Below is the original layout, and then one idea.
to the left is the laundry in the mudroom, below is the dining room, and to the right is the family room.

thanks!

Can the door to the laundry room be moved. If avoidable, you shouldn't have a walkway bisect the path between sink and range.

No unfortunately. The garage is right in front of it. I've read some about the work triangle and for safety that this is not ideal. However, my thought was that it would look nice and be balanced to have stove and range hood in the middle as focal point. I'm very open to other suggestions. This is just a rough brainstorm.
Plan is to open up wall to dining room and family room.

Are either of those load bearing?

Thankfully no. Trusses in roof in ranch one story.

Can you sketch out the whole house plan so we can see how this space relates to those around it?

    ok super rough
    main area is
    top left kitchen
    bottom left dining
top right family room with fireplace and tv.
bottom right living room ( next to front door. then bedrooms to right)

Does the corner of the living room bump into the lower right corner of. The kitchen like that?

it does. so plan is actually to move dividing wall between family and living room down about 3 feet so it will be in line with hallway and eliminate that bump in.

If you can add a prep sink to the island, the plan should work well. Following drawing might not be exactly to scale:

cool ideas thanks mamagoose. I'm obviously a nube, but what software did you use to make those edits?

yes I like the idea of pantry like you have it.
Not sure about running water line for another sink and honestly I don't really want to clean two sinks but it is a good suggestion. thank you.

Are you going to be using these four spaces as formal living/formal dining/kitchen/family or do you have other needs like an office, maybe?

yes that is the plan. we're not formal people at all. "formal"living is currently just a couch and big open space for playing with some toy bins. family room has the TV.
have an office in one of the bedrooms currently, but planning to have more kids so will likely need to absorb that some day.
    thanks.

Is the sink wall of the kitchen 14'7" or 12'8". I think I'm seeing two different numbers.

it's 14 feet sorry. I need to fix those.

I use the MS Paint program. You can also upload a graph to Paint, then draw all your walls, cabinets, etc. It's easier when the drawing is scaled one square to 6" or 12".

You will need a water source for prep, and will naturally prep beside it, so this would be your path:

You could rinse at the sink, then move everything to the island, but as benjesbride mentioned, having the range and sink on two different walls with an entry door between them is not optimal. Think about carrying a large pot of boiling pasta water fromthe range to the sink, when someone wants to go through the door.

Also, if you have primary prep on the island, a helper can load or unload the DW, or gather dishes to set the table, without interfering in prep tasks.

Thanks so much. The mock ups are great. I really appreciate your time. I'm curious, is this just a hobby for you?

I think I need to go back to the drawing board. You both make some really good points about the prep area. There is also a half bathroom past the laundry area, which it would be nice for guests to use without interfering with cooking.

The big issues I foresee is that our new plumbing will be running through the Attic. In order to run plumbing to the island it would have to go through our concrete slab which I imagine will be expensive and difficult. There's also a window where the sink is now and I think that's a nice place for it visually.

    I'll keep brainstorming. Thank you!

Okay here is a better rendition of the current/ original layout. Top left kitchen with one window, top right family room with fireplace and TV, bottom left dining room, and bottom right sitting room/formal living room.

My goals are to open up the kitchen to the family and dining room. I feel this will help the flow a lot. The kitchen and family room are also very dark, so I want to let in more light. I also plan to move the wall between the family and living room so the hallway runs straight.

Currently I want to keep the sink where it is since it is under the window.

We discussed it more, and we really don't want a prep sink in an island as we don't feel it wouldn't be worth the cost/functionality for us, though I understand the rational. We cook, but usually not extravagant. I realize though that I'm breaking the zone principles and the ice, water, stone, fire rules.

I'd like to open up like this, but still struggling to layout the kitchen in a sensible way.

Any other suggestions to improve the whole home/kitchen layout/flow/functionality? Thank you.
