Actually, Light O' Day is a rebloomer that once belonged as part of the Endless Summer Series. But, it performed poorly in cold zones and was suddenly removed. They advertised it heavily as a lacecap rebloomer, come and buy it and after a while, people started complaining and poof... removed from the website... not a peep.

Other wholesalers still sell it though. In Zones 7 and warmer, it would bloom much better from old and new growth. In Zones 5 & 6, it may not bloom at all or may bloom sparingly.

I also do not like the flower production of variegated hydrangeas and have cut the blooms off before they are spent. The foliage -it was another variegated hydrangea- is worth the price (usually). ;o)

I agree that winter protection of this year's stems would improve the odds of getting bloomage.

Dried out looking stems that have not leafed out by the end of May can be pruned all the way down. In your zone 5, I would expect existing stems will get zapped by winter if you do not winter protect. Use mulch or several tons of leaves to protect when it goes dormant. Remove the protection after your avge date of last frost.

Luis, I think you need to check your sources on this one. To the best of my knowledge this hydrangea was never part of the Endless Summer series (Bailey Nurseries have introduced plenty of hydrangeas that are not under the ES brand) and it is not a new wood bloomer. At least nowhere can I find documentation to support this but plenty that states that it only blooms on old wood. The reason production was discontinued is that there was nothing that differentiated this hydrangea significantly from other variegated lacecaps and the patent was never granted as a result.

Hmm, so which one am I thinking of? I thought it was supposed to go under the series, with the name Eclipse, but due to the blooming issues, it never made it so they released under the LOD name.

My feeling is all variegated Hydrangeas are losers(few if any blooms) especially in z5.. if you want variegated try Hostas with maybe Annabelle Hy. There are so many Great Hys that don’t need Winter protection

I agree with hyed - even in my very hydrangea-friendly climate, 'Mariesii Variegata', 'Tricolor' and other variegated macs are extremely reluctant bloomers. But great foliage effect if that's all you need or want :-))

Indeed. You can also plant them in a shaded area that looks dark and the variegation makes the area look brighter!
