Recommendation for fireplace surround and kitchen back splash

We are finishing up our great room and kitchen remodel. The counters were just installed and I've chosen a stainless steel and glass hood to go over the range. I'd like suggestions on the best tile choices to complement my kitchen design and built in/fireplace. Thanks so much for the input.

I'm bored with everyone going with boring white subway so I'll suggest some more fun and unique ideas ...

Pratt & Larson has great tiles for fireplaces. Lots of patterns, colors and sizes. It is usually better to pick tiles and then frame the fireplace to fit the tiles, but you'll have to pick tile size carefully to work with what you have.

Just wanted to say your kitchen is beautiful! Curious what color your walls, shelving and cupboards are surrounding your fireplace. Wishing you the best with your beautiful new kitchen.

Really appreciate the suggestions and advice, @chispa and @CattCombs. My walls are painted Modern Gray and the built-ins are Acier... both by SW. Thanks for the compliment, @NewEnglandGal.

Lovely kitchen. It's a very pleasant and mild design (very good thing - you won't get tired of it and there's nothing about it that will be "dated" in six months). It also leaves you lots of options for neat tiling/backsplash/fireplace surround.

One aspect of design history you could tap into for indirect inspiration is Victorian fireplaces. Many fireplaces from this era had really exquisite tile surrounds:

The surrounds and hearths came in all sorts of designs and colors (we have four fireplaces in our Victorian house and they all have different tile).

The reason I say indirect inspiration is because you'd want a contemporary/more modern take on this to match your interior - clean lines, modern tile designs, etc. Having a surround of interesting decorative tile on the fireplace surround and tying the rooms together by using them as accents in the backsplash would be very nice, I think.

You can do so many things since your kitchen has a blank slate. You could go for simple subway tile in a glossy white, or a grey, even blue. You could do a herringbone design or arabesque tile. You could even go with glass tiles. There are a lot of options out there for you.

I love your kitchen! What a lovely place to work and be a part of the family with the beautiful great room.

I agree with Chipsa, a unique and fun tile that is different than subway.
