Backsplash - I ordered a sample of the Sumi-e Izu Natural 1 x 4 (this appears to be 1 x 4 on my screen), and it looks nothing like this. Alot of dark teals. Could this possibly be Lunada Bay Tozen Erbium Natural in 1 x 4? I just ordered that sample in hopes that it will be a match. This kitchen is gorgeous!

what do you mean by a "special white thinset"... is this the grouting for the tile, and what is used to mount it to the wall??

white thinset is the 'mortar' used to adhere the glass to the surface. Grout is grout which is used between tiles. All tile stores can help with your needs.

I went on the Lunada Bay website. The sumi-e is offered in 1 x 1, 1 x 4, and 1 3/8 by 6. All the comments on here are confusing. Some say it's 1 x 1, some say 1 x 4 and another Rachel Reider Interiors post says 1 x 6. A woman in the comments section did say she measured it and it''s the 1 x 4. ALSO: I did pick up samples at the tile dealer. There are the 2 finishes: natural (more glossy) and silk (matte). Which finish does this backsplash in the picture have?

Hi Gail-

Is there any way that you could post a pic of the natural and silk izu samples?

I am very curious as to the visual differences between the two, and which one this really is, because Rachel Reider says that this is the 'natural' in recent comments, and 'silk' in the older comments.

Thanks!!!!!

I actually went to my local dealer for this brand and the closest match to the picture was the Tozen series, color Erbium, finish Natural...the Izumi was very mutated and did not pop as photographed. Hope this helps!

Ben Moore White Dove is a favorite or you could try a very light gray. We love restoration hardware for hardware.

Often we enter the design phase after the home is constructed. Unfortunately I don't have that specific information for you on this particular project but I do know it was hardwood. Jacobean is a nice color from Minwax stains if you like dark floors.

I believe it was a Laticrete white grout though some of those finer details escape me as this project was about 5 years back.

Are you replacing or painting the backsplash tiles? You could end up with a real chore because of the stove hood vent -- taking it out. You should be prepared for the possibility that the stove hood vent and the overhead cabinets will need to be taken down to redo those tiles.

It's hard to answer the carrera question (assuming you're talking about carrera) without knowing what else is going into the space but look for the tile under stonepewteraccents.com, then glass, sumi-e, 1x6 and I believe the color is Izu Silk but it's been a while. Your local tile company should be able to get a sample for you. I believe this counter is Pietra del Cordoza in antiqued/leather finish and I personally like this medium gray tone with this tile.

What Houzz contributors are saying:

Jennifer Ott Design added this to Countertop and Backsplash: Making the Perfect Match
Approach 2: Select the Backsplash FirstOf course, if you happen to find a backsplash you absolutely love before you’ve even looked at countertops, I say go for it. Making this selection will absolutely help you narrow down the options for the countertop. If you go for a statement-making backsplash such as the one here, find a quiet, subtler countertop material so it doesn’t fight with the backsplash.Shown: Pietra del Cardoso stone counter; Stone & Pewter Accents mosaic glass tile backsplash
Laura Gaskill added this to 10 Ideas for a Breezy Coastal Kitchen
4. Iridescent tile. The shimmer of an iridescent tile backsplash calls to mind the glint of sun on crystal-clear water and pearly shells beneath the waves. Even a small tiled area can make a big impact when it’s this gorgeous, so consider splurging on the tile you really want, even if it must be in a smaller area.Backsplash tile: Sumi-e in Izu Silk, 1⅜ by 6 inches, Lunada Bay Tile
Nicole Jacobs added this to 7 Builder Upgrades to Skip in a New Home
6. Backsplash. Builders make most of their money from upgrades, and tile work is typically one of the more heavily upgraded items you’ll encounter. It’s also one of the simpler and less expensive upgrades you can do on your own, or hire somebody to do, after you move in. If you wait, and go without a backsplash in the meantime, you’ll have the opportunity to browse the tile shops in your area and score something on sale or in stock. Also, builders usually don’t allow you to tile only part of the backsplash area. So if you want to put your money into a higher-end tile, but only want to tile the small area behind the range, for example, this is best done after you take possession, as the builder may not allow this leeway.

Hood Smarts11. Don’t crowd the hood. When using a chimney hood, always leave at least 2 to 3 inches between the hood and the wall cabinets to the left and right. Visually, the hood will not look cramped, and the sides of the cabinets will stay cleaner longer.Browse range hoods and vents
