I think you are right. I tried googling them and it doesnt seem like that variety would do well here. Im glad I passed on them lol.

Some one gave me two little air plants like that minus the day of the dead skulls and i named them bert and ernie but they both died.

I realize I am late to this party but there are some erroneous assumptions here that need to be clarified :-)

First, hardiness zones only apply to winter cold temperatures.........they have NO application as to how well a plant may do under summer growing conditions. So if a plant is labeled with a hardiness zone of 4, of course it will survive winter cold in a warmer zone!! There is no transferring of the zone designation as to how well it will do in summer........that is governed by other factors. I also live in a very mild winter zone and heaths and heathers thrive here!!

But outside of winter hardiness, there are factors that will limit their suitability in many areas. Heaths and heathers are ericaceous plants and require suitably acidic soil. They dislike high summer heat and high humidity and need very good drainage. And they are very drought tolerant once established so may not be very happy in areas that receive plentiful summer rainfall. I doubt you will find any heaths or heathers that are recommended for growing in the ground anywhere south of the Mason-Dixon line :-)

Trader Joe's is not a plant nursery and they often sell flowering plants that will not transition successfully into the garden. But that is not specifically their intention.....these are meant to be temporary and disposable flowering houseplants and are sold inexpensively enough that tossing them when they inevitably start to decline is not a hardship. If you do happen to live where conditions exist that would allow them to be planted outside - as they should be - so much the better!

Its true that the humidity does get a lot of stuff that one might normally think would do okay in our zone. It gets me too lol.
