I would use one big rug and eliminate all this small rugs

Since we don't actually have a "style" ... thoughts on how to enhance or re-design the area?

I would paint the trim around the doors the same color as the doors. 1 large rug and art on the wall

Hi dcarendt - wainscoting is a very Victorian look, and definitely a challenge to balance out if only installed in a specific area of your home. However there's a variety of things you could do to spice up your entry! Luckily this area appears well lit by your ceiling light which is a huge advantage.. if you wanted to create a lighter mood I would opt for a cool white light bulb. This would also make the area feel less brown.

I would invest in a runner for this space - possibly a jute rug runner, or something that is mainly brown as that appears to be your homes "style" - something with a coloured trim would help to add a little interest to your entry way. I can also see from your pictures that you have a woven basket with a lovely plant in it which a jute rug would compliment well.

However - avoid runners that have conflicting lines, you don't want your rug competing against the grain of the floor. something that has a vertical pattern or general texture would look best here.

I recommend investing in a hall table to place against the wall with the mirror to add a little character here. Do you have any framed photos that you love? They would work well on the adjacent wall - I would go for two or four photos in large square frames arranged in a grid fashion - or you could do a photo wall, always a winner!

Alternatively you could invest in a bench for the "mirror wall" - brighten up the space with some lighter soft furnishings (throw pillows, blankets, etc..) Have a look online to find something you like, maybe Target, Pottery Barn, Crate & barrel, etc..
