As for rug(s) in the hall, thinking just put a rug in the area by the front door and leave the rest bare.

Just the area in front of the door and something very simple with that floor.

That was my original thought as well Judy. Then I had a couple of friends over and they thought I should put one right in the front door that leads into the rest of the entryway space.

They are stained. Thank you for the encouragement for painting them white. I have heard this before and I would love to make that happen. Do you have anything thoughts about which color white I should choose, gdevlinjr?

Yes, as your friends suggested…that is what I meant as well. Just put a rug right at the front door. Add mirror/art on the walls for a welciming feel

I vote for the 2nd direction but bigger.

I would put a rug almost wall to wall in the section of the entry right in front of the door. I would also consider a rug at the foot of the stairs to visually make coming down the stairs easier to see where floor is. You might be able to do a small tile on the stair risers. Definitely something lighter, but not white. Whites would be too stark IMO.

What about painting the risers, @Flo Mangan? I was thinking I would paint the risers some sort of white color. It wouldn't have to be stark white.
