You don't need to do anything for the Nandina. I garden in zone 7 and grow them.

That's going to be an extremely crowded planting, if that is indeed a full-sized barberry bush.

'Rose Glow' barberry is one of the larger growing forms and in my zone 8/9 climate, a mature one is easily 6' tall and wide, sometimes bigger and with a fountaining habit that is NOT enhanced by pruning!!. Perhaps the landscaper intended for the Mexican hair grass to be removed down the road to allow for the barberry growth. And even if he didn't, I would, as it reseeds like a maniac and is borderline invasive in my area!!

Dawn, keep pestering the landscaper for a complete list of your plants, to include Genus, species, and Cultivar names. I wouldn't consider the job finished until you have the list in your hand.

I've managed to identify most of the plants now with the help of Houzz responders. Thanks to all!

I don't see any problem with the Barberry growing to its full size. It will fill very nicely the empty space around.

As for Mexican hair grass, as many gardeners know, the plant invasive in one area may not be invasive in another. It all depends on the climate and soil characteristics. I would definitely keep it to see how it works for me, it is beautiful and will not obstruct the Barberry growth.
