You have what looks like a lovely vintage home. I would think about a bolder area rug in the entry. One that nods towards the more modern feel of your living room. This one doesn't come in a size appropriate for your entry, but it gives you an idea of what I mean. I think the modernity of it as well as how the colors repeat those of your walls and art are a good fit.

I also think you could reconsider the hooks, racks and shelves on the walls. I can see something a little more artistic and minimalist for coats and hats. Perhaps something along these lines:

It would be nice to have a landing spot upon entry. I wonder if there is enough room for a narrow storage bench against the stair wall?

Thanks! I really like the idea of a modern bright rug! This one was borrowed from another room. We use the shelf behind the door as somewhat a landing strip, plus we have storage benches and a wardrobe in the porch, but we have considered a very narrow console for that space.

Something makes me think that if you painted the 3 wall surfaces that run at a right angle to your entry, & kitchen doorway, a pretty shade of white, you would LOVE it.

Leave the walls around the entry door, and kitchen doorway, blue, and the angled small triangle to ceiling(any walls that face the entry door), blue, .....but give yourself some light and and some lighter feelings, and paint the wall your console table hangs on, white, going up the stairs till it ends or makes a turn only....... Paint the angled wall with the floor trim board on, beneath the stairwell banister, white, ---and paint the wall to your right, the length of the hallway to the kitchen, white. It has the 2 white matted papers framed on it.... I think that might really make it brighter, with the nice light colored rug you want to get...

By using the white matted frame art, I can sense that you too, are thinking a little more white in the area would be a nice accent with the dark woods of the entry door and stairway banister..

Thanks for the advise on painting the walls white. I think I would really like that, I'm not sure why I never considered white at the time (4 years ago). If my kids keep up their antics it will definitely need paint soon. I never would have thought about doing certain walls white but it's a good idea.
