Same experience here. Bulb mush in the spring.

One year I potted them up and kept them in an unheated garage. They froze solid but after they thawed and started growing I put them outside and they were fine. I did put them back into the garage if there was weather cold enough to freeze the pot, but left them out for frosts etc.

I've had success leaving them outdoors in a sheltered area - near a brick wall and covered with leaves. They do just fine for me that way.

I may try my luck and mulch well to see what happens. I have two semi large cement planters and one has stargazer lilies that were planted by previous owners and they surprising come up every year. I’m guessing plastic pots wouldn’t fare so well though.

UPDATE:
Wanted to update in case it helps anyone in the future. I went ahead and planted some extra tulips and daffodils in a large cement planter. The planters are about 5 feet from the house and not protected from wind. I mulched with an inch of leaves-nothing else except the large amounts of snow we received this year. I live in zone 5. We had record breaking cold temps this winter (almost -30 degrees.) No daffodils sprouted, in fact they rotted, but every single tulip bulb did and appears healthy.
