Backsplash Ideas!

Hello!

We are going to have backsplash put in our galley kitchen. As you seen, the cabinets are white and the granite is mainly black but has specks of off-white, brown and blue. Because of this, should I just go with a basic white subway tile backsplash? I am open to suggestions!

You’ll want to remove the 4 inch granite for a backsplash to look good.

I am beyond confused for my own backsplash but I’m sure some helpful people will chime in with ideas for you :)

sorry no suggestion for backsplash but I love your granite. what is it?

Salonva, I don’t know what kind it is! Was here when we moved in! ;) the cabinets were a natural wood and we painted them white (after a 5 day process) last year. Makes the space brighter and simpler.

I love we’re your going but I think you should change the countertops to this and the backsplash to either the second or third picture

HU-753200917, I would love to change the countertops to your suggestion but we are sticking with what we have for now. So in that case just interested in backsplash.

It's labradorite blue Granite. Very pretty stone and would look great with blue glass tiles.

Yes a white that works with the cabinets.

I wish Beth H. would find this thread. She's very talented with finding good backsplash tiles. What about Cle tile? It's kind of rustic, and pricey. This is eastern earthenware mix. It might be too busy.

You might be able to use a more blue-gray tile with this stone.

Go white subway tile, you won’t be disappointed.

That is Verde Peacock Granite, it is a deep green with gold flecks in it. Because the kitchen isn't huge and the granite is clean and simple you could go a little busier if you wanted like this one.

    Tile Suggestion

White would be the safest choice, if you are okay with a black and white kitchen.

White surely works. I'd consider tying in the floor a bit with a tan or gray tile that picks up that tone from the flecks -- would add a bit of interest too.

Thanks zmith! That tile is very pretty, but like you said, I'm afraid it would look too busy for a small space. Ideally, I would like something clean but stands out.

aiutzi , then the question is, skinny or thick tiles? horizontal or vertical?

Astonia Stone Artisans , this is beautiful! I would like to incorporate a little color in the back splash to avoid a full B&W kitchen since I have other earth tone colors in the dining area and living room.

acm, yes! I would like to have a little color but not too much so that it's busy. One day I would also like to redo the floor to a more basic tile, but that isn't in the near future. ;)

I don't like white tile juxtaposed with black granite....too much contrast. And your granite doesn't seem to have enough (if any) white to make it work with a white backsplash. I would look for a glass tile which matches one of the other colors in your granite...maybe the blue if you like blue. That matching color will connect the tile and granite visually. And, yes, the short backsplash must come off first.

felizlady, thanks so much. The granite has more tans/browns/light blues/and a little gray.

You already have a backsplash. I’d suggest either taking down the one you have (be aware that countertop material is thicker than tile so you may have gaps between the countertop and the wall that the tile wouldn’t hide) or just painting your wall space above your exsting backsplash whatever color you like.

crl_ , thank you! The space under the cabinets is already painted the same color as the wall. I have under-lighting which is nice and helps to brighten up the space.

I am really NOT an expert- but I do like all your choices. I think the first one might actually be too plain. It;s hard because close up your granite has a lot of detail but in the photos, it reads almost solid black. So I think the second the marble chevron would be great. I think the last one would be too busy.

Again I have to remind you that I am FAR from expert ; just giving you my initial impression.

salonva, thank you! I am no expert either which is why I'm asking Houzz. ;) And you're right, the closer you look at the counter tops the more colors you can see, otherwise it just looks like a soft black!

suzchaps, thick as in standard size subway tile not the sheets and horizontal. If you do subway tile go fir a grey grout to tie into the counters as some others mention white tile and white grout would be a bit stark. Or you could do a true hexagonal similar to your option D in both cases I recommend darker grey grout.

    See photos below for tile.

Ashley M , thanks so much and for these visuals! You think a white tile (vs cream) would be best to match the cabinets?

smakcanada, this is nice. Thanks so much!

It’s tough to see the tone of your cabinets in the photos but they look more white vs cream. But to answer your question either white or cream would be fine.

Personally, my kitchen is similar to yours I have white/cream coloured cabinets and white subway tile. It looks good together and no one seems to notice the difference in white. If your cabinets pull really on the cream side (which I don’t think they do) then going cream would be safe as long as the tile is a similar shade otherwise go white.

Ashley M , helpful. Thank you! My cabinets are more white than cream.

Then white seems best. And no problem.

Forgive me if you’ve already thought this through, but please make sure you have a plan for the short wall. If you were starting from scratch, you’d want to have no 4” granite at all, and you’d only put backsplash on the long back wall, letting it die in the corner. But you already have the 4” granite, so if you rip it out and don’t put tile there, you’ll need to make sure that a patch and paint job will look nice. You could tile the short wall, but that doesn’t always look great.

i just replaced my counters and backsplash and agonized over this issue. In the end, I felt like I had to tile the short wall, but I made sure I chose a tile with a pretty pencil trim so the border would look finished.

    Good luck!

suschaps: my counter is similar to yours. My glass tles are Arctic Fog from Home Depot with white grout. I like choice 4 of your options. a little texture, some colours to pick up in your granite. i hope you keep your hard wood floor- it seems lovely.

Subway tile is classic as goes well with anything but that brown almost as a copper tone to it. I would peruse your local tile store and get a few samples to try before making the final decision.

smakcanada, thanks for your thoughts! I will check out Artic Fog glass tiles. Our kitchen floor are a multi-color tile. We have wood floors everywhere else.

I have that same granite in my kitchen. It is Verde Peacock as a previous poster mentioned. My kitchen Is completely different since I have natural cherry cabinets but here’s a closeup of the granite.

For my backsplash I used mosaic (which gets no love on this forum) but I ran it vertical just behind my cooktop.

I’m not suggesting you do a mosaic but I think the light green color tile in my mix would look great with your white cabinets and would work well with the blue/green splotches in your granite. Daltile has a similar color (RS34 Succulent Green) that might work. It comes in a 3x6 subway size. In 3 these styles

It also come in a 6” hexagon and a 6” square.

Even though you have white cabinets, I would not do white backsplash tiles, especially not ones with marble. In my opinion marble does not play well with Verde Peacock.

Good luck in finding just the right tile.

I wouldn’t go with whit subway , no no
I see a glass tile or mosaic with silver / brown
    hues ...

Those multi mosaic tiles are sooo busy. I would think they will date quickly too. I'm just more conservative I guess. And because my kitchen is open to dining/living area I think you have to visualize with a broader view to the whole open area.
