How does one hire a designer?

We have been in our house over 2 years, and now have a better sense of this very unique custom home than at the time of purchase. We have acquired some furniture pieces, art, etc. and definitely have a direction going on. We know what we like (and dont like) but there's no substitute for professional advice and guidance. We need someone who can be available for ongoing consults, bring direction and ideas that will add cohesiveness, and tie the spaces together into an overall plan.
Our hesitation is: how do we identify the right person? How do we interview possible candidates? How do we compensate for services? We are unsure on how to go about this process.
All advice is welcome...and thank you!
