I wouldn't do single piece. At least 3 with one or more of the 3 new growth. How frequently do you water? That dictates the pot and potting material. What kind of pots do you use? This plant like good drainage. So I plant mine high in the pot. On the lava rock, not in it. It will decide what roots go where. Because I use lava rock with clay pots in a warm climate I water daily.

I also have one mounted on cork. That one is stronger. It gets mottled light, either direct sun or bright shade. More bright shade. Watered daily.

I've seen that YouTube! And I followed it's directions. It took almost a year for those bulbs to anchor themselves into the pot, but they eventually took hold. I have mine in a clay pot with half small orchiata and half sphag. Mine likes it wetter than drier.

I tried mounting mine. Huge fail. It was waaaaay too dry and nearly died. I had to water it 3x per day at minimum just to keep it alive! It's much happier in a pot with bark and sphag in my climate. It's been outside since May and I just took it in tonight since low will be 41F.

Thanks for the input you guys. Planting single bulb is contrary to anything I’ve read over the years. M. tenuifolia is new to me and I thought perhaps there was merit to her repot style. I’m glad I have this forum to check out these types of ideas.

Harvey, I remember seeing your plants and they loooked wonderful, but then everything you grow does look great. I cannot water every day! So I like the idea of the orchiata and sphagnum. My pot will be either clay or plastic, whichever I have on hand to suit this plant. It has long roots and they were a tight mass of circular roots on the bottom of the pot. I’m hoping I have a tall pot. My preference is plastic, I like to be able to see what the Roots are doing. I’ll get it settled tomorrow while we still have nice weather for this old timer to want to be outdoors.

How often do you water? Plastic will need the least water so use sphagnum sparingly. However if you use the clay pots then a little more sphagnum depending on your frequency of watering. Because this plant likes a lot of drainage I think the clay is better. Plant it high in the pot. On the medium, not in...

I have the opposite experience as Harvey, so I think this very much has to do with how much humidity you have where you are growing. Once my plants come inside from their outdoor summer vacation, humidity is low. I only water 1-2 times per week because it takes ALL day for so many plants! My maxillaria likes being wetter than I expect. This summer it was damp nearly all summer (wet summer here) and it's never been happier.
