Help with decorating this room. Dazed and confused!

I have spent about six months going back and forth on furniture colors etc for this room. I feel that when I go out furniture shopping I’m in the middle of a transition in furniture styles. I see all this gold and darker woods and all the mid century modern style in most of the stores. I’m having a tough time going with a specific look and or finding furniture that fits the space. My style is more transitional. And I love both all the bling of zgallerie and the clean designs of Restoration hardware. I need to bring some color into the room. But I am over the grey and or blue that I see everywhere. I love pops of black and I see gold is making a comeback. As you can see I’m all over the place. And can’t seem to find that inspiration piece that will launch the style of the devote for this room. Help please

    I love a persian rug with very contemporary furniture it gives you an opportunity to add color anywhare you like and is a nice backdrop for white furniture

      Go with adding the colors you love; gold, maybe russets, with black and cream. Really pretty home!

      I was trying to get a sense of where you are going from your ideabooks and I can see that you are a bit all over the place. Please consider hiring a local designer as they will make your life so much easier and potentially save you money as well. They would start with a floor plan that takes into consideration how you will use this room, your existing finishes, etc. For instance, I am seeing the possibility of this type of arrangement from your ideabook

      Can you get another sofa to match so they float in the room (having it up against the wall in your room wouldn’t be my first choice). Will you have a TV here? Again, it wouldn’t hurt to call around and say you wanted help with one room and your budget was ‘x’ and are they interested? Good luck!

      It needs a large rug, color, and art work. Post some things that you like, and the forum will gladly weigh in on what looks best. I'd encourage to start with a rug first.

      A large (preferably colourful) rug will turn the space into a room. Tables, lamps, and large art (or groupings of smaller pieces) will complete the picture.

      The arches and railings upstairs give me a Spanish feel. I would paint the walls in BM Dance de Soleil which is yellow with red undertones. I have it throughout much of my house and find it, surprisingly, an easy backdrop colour that can be with red tones, blue tones, and even the grey or white tones. More importantly, it makes me smile every time I walk into a room.

      Agree with Patricia about orientalists rug with modern furniture. But even if you don’t go that route, get your rug first and make that the focal point and inspiration for the rest. It will fall into place I promise.

      No TV going in that room that room connects to my kitchen and family room. I love the black and white fotos. I also love the picture with the two flooring couches but I feel it would cut off the entrance to the room from the foyer lay picture. It’s been hard to find a coffee table to fit the space the couch is 10 ft long and the seat is 20 in from the floor. It seems that all the coffee tables that are oversized are 14 inches and I’m afraid it could look bad.
      I have thought of putting two or more coffee tables too.

      Ok I will start with the rug then.
      Here’s the Selena atta her to that.
      If l keep the couch up against the wall I will need at least a 10x14 size rug. However if I pull the couch off the wall and put a console table behind it I can get away with a 8x10. Which is way easier and more options at a lower costs. I have an old dog who has accidents here and there so I don’t want to buy anything pricey. Thank you all for helping me out here. I really appreciate everyone’s feedback.

      The more I think about your space I actually think you should start with that big wall. What speaks to you in regards to art? Large and subtle, large and colorful, a large map? Large is the key. I think it will be easy to settle on other elements once your statement wall is selected.

      Even if you keep that sofa in that location I think you float it off the wall a bit. Chairs go opposite sofa for better conversation grouping and keeping the view open.

      You say you're "over the gray" but that's what I see in your pictures except for the white sofa.

      I hope the gray chairs are more comfortable than they look. Maybe they could be the end chairs if you have a dining table?

      Seeing your other pictures from the family room I don’t think you introduce gold at this point or if you do it’s in subtle accent pieces. Not large elements.

      I do think this arrangement works better for that room however I wonder about the back height of the grey chairs. Why don’t you move those like this and see what it does to that bar area behind? Will stools go there and if so will they match the others?

      Thank you so much for your suggestions :-) love the paintings!!!and the mirrors on the last picture and I can get new chairs. Those chairs were an inexpensive buy and will fit nicely in my office or guest room. I love where you are going. The thing with the gold to introduce it as accents like painting light fixtures or coffee table to kind of blend it into my decore but not marry it. I prefer the brushed antique light gold matt gold. I like distressed mirror too I guess What makes me question which way to go is do I try to tie in the black from the iron from the upstairs onto my tables in other words should I go with a black and or expresso end tables and coffee table or it doesn't matter? I think I should stay away from chrome. your thoughts.

      Well I go back to the art wall first - depending on what you choose will determine other metal finishes. For instance, if you did a mirror art wall then I would avoid chrome and go with black or wood in order to balance the bling. And if you did a large colorful or neutral canvas I could see chrome on the coffee table -so to me its all a balancing act and you need to pick one major thing first - art wall or rug and then it will be easy to fill in the other pieces of the puzzle.

      Find a large painting that you really love for over the sofa. It should be 2/3 to 3/4 the length of the sofa.


      Then use the art to guide you...

      And as for the size of the rug - first, please move the grey chairs opposite the sofa to judge spacing. That will also determine the best coffee table size to work with. Order of decision making IMO will be art, rug, then side and coffee tables, lamps last.
