vent registers... ugly?

HVAC friends out there?

Are those three registers ugly? Is that easily replaceable using one long linear one? What are my options for a modern alternative?

Are those three registers ugly? No Is that easily replaceable using one long linear one? Yes What are my options for a modern alternative? Several. If you can draw it and afford to pay for it,any hvac contractor will locate it or arrange to have it built.

Are they ugly - yeah, they really are ugly. They draw attention to the bulkhead and they are ugly because of the spacing - again the spacing only makes sense for the bulkhead... not for the things below that which should be the focus and are asymmetrical.

You are correct, you fix it by not having vents there at all (best solution) or having a single long vent.

The HVAC guy is pretty useless I'm discovering which is why I turned to this community, as I need to make a decision quickly whether to continue or make some changes. It would be helpful to propose some possibilities to help the conversation (I'm hoping) but I've only managed to come up with the linear vent.

Maybe two longer vents, equally spaced either side of the fridge. Note that a quality vent cover will distribute the air much better than the cheap, stamped metal ones.

You can order any size grille from hvacquick.com.

I doubt you need three supply vents. You should be able to paint whatever grille you get to match the soffit to make it less noticeable. Maybe a single grille the same width of the refrigerator and centered above it might work. It would give the illusion it is part of the refrigerator.

I wanted to replace my grilles like yours with linear grilles but wasn’t able to because I would then have to replace the ductwork to pass inspection. What should have been a simple switcwhich would just involve adjusting the juncture would have turned into an expensive project because of the Code inspection.

HI -- Do a search under " modern air vents " Google or here on Houzz . There are so many decor vents and deflectors and long modern vents . You do not need to settle for the little generic looking ones .

Helen, I am little skeptical about the code violation. I could be wrong, but it may have been then contractor did not want to make the changes and used the code compliance as an excuse. Homeowners are always free to call their local code official and ask what is required to pass the final inspection.

@MIke. I can’t imagine why the HVAC company wouldn’t want to make extra money for what would be a relatively easy job of connecting the new grilles. I live in Los Angeles which has fairly stringent codes and the inspection process has been quite thorough with numerous inspections for various things. Bathroom lights, water fixtures, door knobs, exterior door hinge, even my kitchen sink all have to be in compliance with Code as well as the obvious stuff like electrical. If I even moved a wall socket to a higher location, it would have triggered additional compliance regulations.

I sympathize with you in that my township in NJ also has strict code enforcement.

I find that most contractors don't understand the code and don't want to undertake doing anything that could be flagged as a code violation even if it means more work for them. In cases like this it is best for the homeowner to do their own research and find out what the code official will allow.

You can do something that will look like one long one and I think for a contemporary house that would look much better. You could consider getting 3 or 4 replacement grills from SZ and creating what appears to be one single long element in the soffit with them. You could leave the 3 as planned by have someone make a single long grill that goes over all three with a single element.

Air distribution is critical so though it may look like a long single vent, it may actually need to be 2 or 3 to get proper distribution; Whatever you do, make sure that you get enough air flow through your grills. That's not be fun to find out that your great looking system doesn't work because enough air can't get through

@mike - This wasn't something that I wanted to shoulder the responsibility for confirming. There were other more important items that I took the energy to get my way despite theoretical Code but I wasn't going to rely on what a clerk in the City said and then find out that it wasn't correctly done and also force the HVAC people to do it. There were some other issues like my kitchen sink which were much more important to me in terms of not accepting that the sink I wanted didn't meet Code.

The grilles are painted white to match the rest of the wall so it's not an item that I notice.
