Where to put big hosta for the winter?

I was holding a hosta for a friend. Friend got sidetracked and is not ready for it yet. This has been in a pot with minimal dirt since May, because it was supposed to be temporary. It’s got a root ball at least a foot in diameter: we were planning on dividing it into 4.


I’m thinking I need to put this Blue Cadet or Halcyon somewhere myself for the winter. I expect I will end up keeping it, I just don’t know where yet. (I keep buying “Halcyons” that turn out not to be).



What is better:


Plant the whole thing wherever I can find a vacancy? I have a holding bed but it’s on the full side.


Divide it into 4’s now and plant? I’m thinking division would be a bad idea now.


Keep it in its plastic pot, turned on its side, under a juniper? This is where I have successfully overwintered hostas before.


Pot it with a decent amount of dirt, THEN do the above?
