I am familiar with induction cooktops. A friend had one and they are amazing. But I am not looking to spend that kind of money. I am looking in the $800-$900 range. My main requirement is a large capacity oven with a self-cleaning feature that actually works and an appliance that is not going to break down in less than a year. Twenty would be fabulous! There are so many unreliable brands now.

You can get the frigidaire induction for $1000 or less. I've seen it for $799 at the big box stores. With Thanksgiving coming, it will surely be on sale again. Here it is at the big box store. The Frigidaire has the same range of burner control as a Bosch or Miele. Electrolux is the parent company.

Consumer Reports (https://www.consumerreports.org/join) has ratings and recommendations for both electric smoothtop and induction ranges. Since you're concerned about the oven size, be sure to check for the oven dimensions on the websites of the manufacturers whose products you're considering.

Do consider an induction range. The Frigidaire Gallery FGIF3036TF which is recommended (but not top-rated) by CR is $852 at Home Depot.

Just look for something other than AquaLift. I actually thought it was optional for cleaning and not the only choice.

While many other brands of ranges now offer both high-heat (traditional) self cleaning oven modes with lower temperature "steaming" self-clean modes, not so with Whirlpool's brands. Depending on the specific model, you get Aqualift or high-heat self-cleaning but not both.

Thank you all! Lawrence, oven specs is one of the first things I check, specifically the interior measurements. JV is correct, with Whirlpool you get one or the other. Shocker of the week? My husband thinks I should look at induction. He has even done the magnet test with our assorted cookware. I am leary of buying one from a big box store. If there is anything wrong with it they prefer to repair or ignore rather than replace. We still have actual locally owned appliance stores so am going to step out into the real world and investigate there.

I hope one has a plugged in unit or a cooktop you can at least try. Bring one of your magnetic pans.

It doesn't matter where you buy it. If it breaks after it's installed, the seller is not going to be doing the repair. In my experience, Home Depot is a good place to purchase appliances and will accept returns of defective or damaged appliances.

Lawrence - home Depot says if you report an issue with an appliance within 48 hours they will take it back. But that's not quite true. They gave me the run around and told me it had to be serviced first. It required a lot of persistence, many calls, walking into a store and negotiating to get them to take it back. What they have written on their website is truly misleading. I'm without a range for almost a month because of the run around they have given me.

I don't want a brand new appliance serviced. They need to just give me a new one. Also I work and can't keep taking off days to wait for them to come and "service" it and then decide whether they want to replace it or order parts and schedule more days to come work on it. I bought a new appliance so I wouldn't have to deal with service visits.

if you live live anywhere near the Chicagoland area, ABT is a large local store that does in-house repairs and has excellent customer service. We have purchased all our major appliances and our TV from them and been very happy.
