Range Hood with Induction Stove

We are renovating our kitchen and placing an induction stove on a large island. The island range hood we were planning to use doesn't look quite right. We are looking at a flush range hood into a 9 ft ceiling. The model we like has 650 cfm. Is that enought for a hood that is 6 ft above the induction? There is another model that has over 1000 cfm's but I don't like it as much. The hood will be vented outside. Any input would be appreciated.

Can't imagine either are effective 6 ft above the cooktop.

Because of the 6' distance between the cooktop and the ceiling flush mounted hood larger and more powerful will be better during cooking operations where a lot of smoke and grease are created. Higher capacity will be better for the times you need it. So it depends on what you like to cook.

It sounds like you are still in planning stages. If so, move the cooktop off the island onto a wall. That way you won't have all the problems and difficulties of trying to exhaust at an island location. And don't believe the TV shows that make it seem like it'll be more social to cook at an island. When you are cooking, you look down at your pans, not up at your friends/family. It's much more social to use the island for prep, where you can all hang out, drink wine without the splatters and smoke from cooking getting in your face, and maybe people can help with the prep on an island free of cooking pots and pans, and just a nice expanse of counter.

Six feet above the cooktop seems like it would be useless - I don't care how powerful it is. I have a 9' ceiling and a (standard, dropped) island range hood over my induction range. I love having my range on an island (sociability has nothing to do with it -- it's nice so you don't face a wall and there's light and space in front of you), but I do have a range hood. I don't use it often, but I sure want an effective hood when I need it.

Hopefully, kaseki will find this thread and chime in. I believe he posted a link at some point showing that it is in fact possible to have a flush-mounted hood in the ceiling. I don't know what the trick is, but I am sure it's something complicated. A normal hood will almost certainly not work this way. But maybe there is some way to have a "air curtain" with a laminar air flow that would make this possible? It can't be cheap though, and it probably requires looking at commercial rather than residential products. That also could cause building code issues depending on how anal your local building department is.

Have you considered putting a skirt around the hood, say 12"-18" tall?
