Kitchen backsplash

We have a very contemporary kitchen remodel underway and are ready to install the glass 3X12” glass backsplash. A couple of questions: 1) are the longer subway tiles considered more contemporary (the tile shop said they are and look that way to me) and 2) should we start by centering the first tile over the range opening and working out from there? I should note that we won’t be doing the work! Before asking our contractor I want to make sure we’ve made the right choice in tiles? It’s nit too late to return them for the more traditional 3X6 tiles. Pros and cons? Thoughts? Thanks much! Work it happening tomorrow!
