Cultivar was selected in New Jersey, is apparently adapted therefore to eastern summers. Is not however the Rocky Mountain version, has instead southern limber pine characteristics. Which could explain an ability to grow where conditions are not like those of the Rockies.

I wouldn't cut the bottom branches off as the bark is not special and like many evergreen specimen plants the conical or pyramidal crown of youngish examples does not look better perched on a pole.

There are many examples of this cultivar in my area, I have had plenty of opportunity to see how skinning the lower part does not produce an enhancement.

Probably the biggest one I have seen that was identified by labeling as this particular selection was in the Yakima Area Arboretum in the dry eastern half of my state. I figured it to have an average crown spread of more than 40 ft. - when the variety was named a 'Pyramid' they apparently knew what to expect.

Yes just saw that one at the Yakima Arboretum. It is gorgeous. But I can't imagine it in many home gardens.

A planted limber pine, now removed that Robert Van Pelt noticed and measured south of Seattle some years ago was something like 70 ft tall. As I remember it this had the general appearance of the southern (var. reflexa) version of which 'Vanderwolf's Pyramid' is clearly an example also. According to A.L. Jacoboson (Trees of Seattle - Second Edition) by about 2005 the Seattle arboretum had (presumably southern) limber pines as much as 71 ft tall and a 'Glenmore Silver' there had reached 66 ft.

Whereas often public plantings of the Rocky Mountain type in Seattle consist of small, dark trees of quite different aspect, not something that most would find particularly decorative.

Sorry, no pic, but there's 2 labeled on the grounds of the Fort Bedford, PA park along the Juanita River. Both are 50+ ft & grow quite upright and relatively narrow compared to standard eastern white pines. Handsome, but not exactly "graceful".

Would you buy and display a cut Christmas tree that was bald near the bottom, without shortening the trunk first so it had branches nearly all the way to the floor?
