Electric string trimmer won't turn on

It's Black and Decker-a basic model. Could it be the switch? Is it worth taking apart and trying to locate a replacement switch. The unit itself is 3-4 years old and cost about $50.

Forgot to mention that I checked the electrical source as well as the power cord.

have you tried searching for a parts diagram? good chance when it breaks you're out-a-luck. looks like it did it's job.

Either the Switch or the Motor . Do a continuity test to verify !

Have you checked the brushers in the motor? What is the model # that should lead to a diagram showing the brushers. A Youtube will probably show the process of checking and chancing the brushers… Good Luck!

I think these suggestions are all over my skill set! Thanks for your ideas.

i agree, it giving you 3+ yrs. service is probably better than average.

Absolutely , if it was just a defective switch it would be practical , when the motor on these base trimmers go south the windings on the armature burn out not just the brush sets .

Good Point! I have learned that if the brushers are not simply installed under threaded caps they can be more trouble to replace than it is worth. Such as, if they have soldered connections and require Tag Wire to retract them, to install the commentator. Normally that grade of brusher will last until you are “Tired Of The Item”… If you see a parts list diagram , Please share it…

Excuse Lazy Me! Burning wood is in 2nd Gear LOL! Now I have wood to split and add to my stash. My “Electric 10-12 HP Splitter likes this cool weather vs heat. I regret not adding a top over my 4 cords of wood (due to possible mold and planning to move "Years"). Now with the excessive rain, I will add a tarp to the current next needed wood which causes the bark to turn loose. This should have occurs before a rain vs the 1/4th cord on the patio. Will mold be a concern in TX wet heat?

    Help!

My “LINCWELDER” AC-180-K that I have used since the 70s with no problems will not run a bead vs sticking.

    1. I have what I consider fresh rods (2-3 years old) and have never had a rod issue using a Military shell container initially.

    2. I run it off 220 Volts service to my Dryer with each having receptacles on opposite sides of a wall….

    3. For the first time since the 70s my 1/8 E6013 or 1/8 E7011 rods are sticking vs allowing me to run a bead.

    4. Troubleshooting I planned to try a newer small Lincoln and Rods but my receptacles are not matching.

    5. What will cause a good arc to strike and will not allow a bead to continue?

    6. Thanks for any help after almost 50 years with no problems.

Loger , should have started a new thread Bud ! However since i am here my 2 cents is that if your running your 180 amp welder on AC then sticking is the norm . Proper amperage setting is imperative , especially when welding 6011 or 6013 1/8 " rod . When running 60 series rod DC is the way to go . 1/8" rod requires 100 amp minimum to reduce sticking and for sufficient heat to form a good puddle . 3/32" rod you may be good @ 75-85 amps . Also a good heating oven is a necessity to keep your rods warm and dry during prolonged storage . I made one 12" x 12" x 24" sheet metal with hinged dr and heated it via a 100 watt bulb . Further this will ensure rods are dry and protect the flux from cracking . Bad rod flux will always stick . I would by some new rods then try again . Otherwise check your ground and also you stinger . Failing that armature or heat switch may require replacement . Worse case scenario bring it to a local welding shop for testing .

I am suddenly out of sync with the “Boards” and try to get info in when I can. This is a concern and I have questioned my “Drs” since age 70 (at 72 now) I had a good 36 year career and my few absences allowed me to receive credit for 40 years of service at 57 years of age.

My memory is starting to challenge me. I have met fellows less than 70 that did not know their age. I have spotted friends walking and knew they were off course and got them home. I stopped “Traveling and Fishing” when I realized was getting confused or forgetting simple matters. I walk 2 miles 5 week days and work projects and maintenance 2-3 days 2-3 hrs a week. That is down from walking 4 miles 5 days and working or volunteering all day My First 10 Years Of Retirement. “I Might J Just Be Tired” LOL!

The Arc welder is up and running w/o finding a reason. After trying a different AC source and another AC Welder I knew mine should work and it did. The “Rods that would arc and stick, Started Continuing To Arc”. I can only say “It Was A Bug”! My rods were stored in a double wall Military Shell Container. Downsizing they are sealed in smaller sealed container, with like new flux. I’ll hope to find some answers with my issues or I’ll get off the 3 Mechanical Boards “Before 90”!.
