So I recently started my first ever doily and the pattern is really confusing me. The pattern seemed very straightforward up until the tenth round, where seemingly random and useless chains and picots come out of nowhere. I tried to trust the pattern and continue accordingly but the petal points which come from the doily's center are never finished and the next couple of rounds just look wrong and messy, completely unlike the given photo. I'm sure there is something I'm missing, and I'd greatly appreciate any kind advise.

The pattern is also supposedly vintage, and it has recently come to my attention that the abbreviations for older patterns have much different meanings than those of modern patterns. If this is the case for my pattern can someone please provide me with a key to decipher it.
