Exterior update

We purchased this house about 3 years ago and have been working on getting the inside cleaned up and updated. The outside, however has taken a back seat. We aren't sure what to do to make it more interesting and give it some curb appeal. It's very plain and the lack of design really emphasizes how long and boring the house looks. The fireplace is very dated looking as well.

Would painting the house a darker color help?

Leave the porch/entry area white (or, at least, LIGHT), and pick up a green or a brown from the surroundings for the rest of the house.

Thank you for your suggestion. I want to try to drop a new color on it digitally so I can get a better idea of colors that would work.

Go dark gray on the paint but white trim and entry area. Remove all the overgrown shrubs and small tree next to the house. Remove the bushes in the island of mulch, and plant a feature tree there instead (maybe a persimmon? Not sure your area). Or ditch the island and redo the yard. Also emphasize a strong walkway to the front door. I think your house will look great.

The plants nearest the house are not improving the overall look. I think better landscaping is all that is needed.

One thing that I don't care for on the house is little contrast in house color and roof color.
I think a darker roof would be better. This is a minor detail.

It is easy to use the visualizer tool that is on many paint sites. You would need to take a more close up photo.
I like the chimney a lot. It is not dated. It suits the setting.

I would remove the pitchers mound in the lawn.

Does the outside landscaping still look the same, since your photo is from 2015. The windows are hidden by the trees, so consider cutting them back or moving them to another location before they become too big. A closer photo would be helpful.

Julie, I think picking a gray, or even a couple of grays from the stone would really work. Right now everything is white and you're losing some of the details (exposed beams, bump outs, etc.) that add interest to the house. Nice looking house that with a little work could be outstanding. A long term solution, if budget permits, could be using some stained horizontal cedar siding to highlight certain areas.

Maybe something along the lines of this. We can't replace the roof though because it's only 3 years old.

We all did those ‘mounds’ for landscaping in the ‘90’s. I think just having the big expanse of lawn looks clean and inviting. You could plant a couple of trees to add interest and shade. Other than that, I think the house looks great.
