Gardenia over winter

How can I over winter gardenia which is in a pot. I'm living in nyc which is zone 7. Should I take it out from a pot and plant it under a tree? And then cover it with a cardboard or leaves? Should I take out the cardboard box during winter when the temperature is above freezing so that it get some sunlight?
