different flooring in open floor plan

My open floor plan has a staircase right by front door, a n open living and dining room, wide hallway leading to kitchen, kitchen eating area and family room. I want to keep the oak hardwood flooring in the LR< dining , and wide hall, But put another kind of flooring in the rest of the downstairs, Woukd this work< or look weird?
