i would say all the panels in the same direction would be nice, if not, you are going to see a breakline. if you are doing top to bottom in the family/kitchen area, do the same at lobby and viceversa.

Thanks, bhoorame. We are definitely doing left-to-right in family room, kitchen, and dining room.

I guess it does not matter if you are on a slab? Otherwise the direction is determined by the joists?

Since foyer is not large, our installer is okay with running the wood parallel to the joists in that area, but that area only.

Run it perpendicular to the joists. Keep the foyer moving in the same direction. If you MUST have it running in a different direction, make sure you pay the installer EXTRA for creating a beautiful border to create a "reason" for change of direction. This border will cost more and will use more wood....but it is one of the only ways to get a sudden change of direction to look "good".

Get his opinion as to how to go about creating a special look for this...and see what the upcharge is going to be. You might decide that a single direction is a much better idea.

SJ Mcarthy: We prefer a simple, clean, modern look so we will skip the border, plus it will be additional cost. Installer's idea was to run top-down hardwood directly into left-right hardwood.

Lay the wood in the foyer in the same direction as the wood in the living area.
