How to figure out what wood is the kitchen cabinets?

Hi I just bought a home and is debating on fixing up the kitchen. How do I figure out what kind of wood is the cabinet? Maple? Oak? (See photo).

I am thinking about staining them because I want a softer grey like stained look. I am still researching and found the Weatherwood Reclaimation Stain products that look like it may work? Does anyone have experienced? (Attached photo of ideal finished look).

This is my first time doing any diy so sorry I’m clueless! Thanks!!

Cabinets look like maple to me. The inspiration cabinets look like they were painted with a lighter wash over the paint.

Have you refinished wood before? Since you mention “clueless,” I am going to assume you have not.

Regular stain cannot be used on finished cabs; you will have to strip and sand to use the product you mentioned. This is a ton of work and MESSY! I believe the stain you posted needs to be used on bare wood....just took a quick look and did not read directions though.

Gel stains can be used over already finished cabs, but a sealer will have to be used. The tricky thing with gel stains is getting a uniform application that does not look blotchy..multiple thin coats is the way to go. General Finishes makes a grey gel stain.
