Can the lights not be mounted between the beams? If not look into track lighting or lights with cables. I agree that the beam mounted lights just look horrible.

Wrong type of lights for that type of ceiling.

Anything you do to try to improve the look would probably cost more than just returning these lights and buying more appropriate ones. You need something that hangs instead of something surface mounted.
