Freestanding vs. Slide-In Range

I am trying to decide between a Freestanding Double Oven Range or a Slide-In single oven Range. Kitchen Reno, so it can be either. There are pros and cons to both. I love the seamless look of the Slide-In, but I see benefit to having the double oven option. I assume the double oven would only be used a couple times a year on holidays, if that, so maybe it’s not worth it. I don’t want to regret not having it on the times I could use it.

Anyone with a slide-in— is it easy and frequent to “splash” on the backsplash grout? I just envision red sauce flying on light grout.

Thoughts? Feedback? Other posts I saw were older, and I assume appliances can change greatly in 3-5 years. Thanks for your feedback. Looking at Whirlpool brand.

You can get a slide in with a double oven. I have a slide in chef collection duo flex by Samsung. It’s actually one oven with a divider you can slide in if you need to cookmat 2 different temperatures. I really like it, but I’m also sure that there are other brands who have slide in double ovens.

I'm pretty sure there are double oven slide in ranges. I think GE cafe or GE profile makes one, it just depends on your budget. I considered them, but ended up with a GE profile free standing double oven range. It's great! I've only had it two weeks and used the smaller oven several times to roast veggies. I almost switched to single oven a few times while researching and I'm so glad I didn't.

Thanks for feedback. I should’ve added... adding both features in one - slide-in AND double oven is out of my budget, so I must pick one or the other.

We had this exact dilemma last summer and ended up buying the double oven range you posted. No regrets! It’s very sleek looking and the grates are hinged, so it’s easy to wipe down the stovetop. I love having two ovens and the small one is very convenient. We got ours at Sears outlet for about half of retail (it had a minuscule scratch on one handle and a broken clip on a side panel)

J Conn, thank you!! Good to hear I am not the only one with this dilemma. Thanks for the feedback. I am leaning that way also. I can’t be too vein about my kitchen, after all, function should win in a kitchen. :)

Our budget kept me in check as well and I'm very happy with what we got. It works great!!

Not sure what your budget is, but I ordered an LG slide in double oven with convection and gas from Home Depot last weekend for about 1,700.00 at a Black Friday sale. The other double ovens I was looking at were about 3-4K.

    Kriii - Wow! that's a great deal!

I was just telling my husband the other day I wish I'd gotten an induction stove double oven range. Though I don't use the oven every day there is often times I wish I had one. Also, DH talked me into a gas range. I'd always used gas ovens until about 4 years before we bought this one, and was familiar with cooking on them, but the new way they make them with the full grates (which look very nice) are such a pain to clean. You can't wipe up a mess until you are done then you have to remove everything.

As cool as the slide in looks I'd probably go with the double oven if you have to choose. I hope someone answers about the splashing, I've wondered that too, THOUGH if you have a nice tile backsplash it might be easier to clean then the nooks and crannies of the back of a freestanding range. The other question I've wondered about a range with a double oven is can you get a full turkey in the larger oven?

Also, keep looking for deals, with Black Friday coming up there will be more. If you are buying all your appliances at once you can often get a good deal that way. Some places will price patch too. We bought when we were moving into our new house and I found a package deal online and then went into a nearby JCPenny's to see the appliances in person, I'd brought the printout of the online price and they matched it for me.

I have the slide in Chefs Collection Induction duo by Samsung and I love it. It has one door but a partition that I can put inside to make it so I can use it as a double oven. The bottom also serves as a warming drawer. I purchased it Black Friday a few years ago. It's a great day to score a great day. Good luck with your choice!!

I love my GE cafe double oven gas range. I use the upper most often but definitely use the lower oven monthly and we don't entertain a lot. I had one in our last house and insisted on getting one for our current home, I loved it so much! The smaller single oven heats up faster too because of the smaller space.

We have a Bosch induction slide in and I really like it. I looked at the double ovens but we just wouldn’t use the second oven enough to make it worth it, and I didn’t want to sacrifice space in the oven to get 2 ovens. Yes, sometimes things splash on the tile behind the stove, but not as often as you would think. We have white tile and white grout and it isn’t getting discolored so far. I love the look of the slide in and am glad we went that direction.

You can definitely find deals on double-oven slide-in ranges that are comparable to the options you posted. And yes, you might splash more with a slide-in because pots and pans are closer to the wall. However, some (including me) prefer slide-ins because they usually have more cooktop space for pots and pans. Freestanding ranges usually lose space to the protrusion with the controls in the back. Slide-ins, with the controls in the front, can free up a lot of space if the controls are fairly vertical.

Take at good look at the double oven as the bottom is practically on the floor so imagine taking out say a turkey from that low. I say go for the one you will use the most as for a couple of times a year we can all adapt to what we have.

As for look the slide in looks cleaner and gives more focus to the backsplash.

FYI - instead of new try an appliance store e.g. scratch and dent. You can get some good deals. You just need to make sure the scratch and dents are not visible (on the side). These stories also get the appliances in which the box might be torn or customer rejected. For example the appliance store recently delivered a refrigerator to me and after installed we noticed it was the wrong model. They took it back and now have to sell it as open box (1 drawer vs. 2 for freezer). This was a $2,800 refrigerator

@bikertoni thanks for the feedback and info. How do you like your 2 drawer freezer? I just saw that today for the first time. It seems like it would be a really nice feature.

Regarding the comment about the lower oven being so low, this was a concern of mine. We ordered a range that has a rolling oven rack. This makes it easier to get items out.

I just left an appliance store. The sales person brought up a valid concern of the double lower oven as a safety hazard for my 2 year old. Great point and immediately made my decision. She would easily be pulling that door open.

Valerie Losue - I love the two drawer freezer. The top drawer is not as deep as the lower but allows me to put items I go for often and holds the ice. The kids only open this drawer as it holds their stuff, frozen vegetable bags, and items in boxes on-their side making it easy to see. The lower drawer is great for big items. Both drawers contain a divider that can slide. My refrigerator is by Bosch. It replaced the side by side. The French doors are great. Picture below.

Since you're going for a single you can consider a Frigidaire freestanding induction for about $800 or for more their slide-in model. 17 levels of temp control for the burners. A Bosch 800 Series slide-in is $3k. Induction is a safety choice because the glass surface doesn't get more than warm. A radiant glass top heats to 750* to heat the pan.
