Panicking Over Colors

I am 50 years old and my mother still picks out my paint and carpet colors. Why? Because I'm colorblind. If left up to me, everything would be beige. I can't even pick out a vanity bench because I don't know what color cushion to buy since my mom has not been here lately (we live in different states). I am getting ready to begin a kitchen cabinet/countertop redo and am panicking because I don't know what color to paint the walls or what color flooring to put down. Cabinet color? White...what else would I feel safe choosing?

    Linda, was thinking about it, just wanted to add - to the extent that rooms are visually connected to each other you'll want to make sure that the colors work together both for the floor color and the paint color. Just something to think about in making choices.

      I have been quoted a price on white Kraftmaid cabinets. I have narrowed my choice in countertops to the two attached photos. What do you think?

      I honestly think neither. There are other laminate choices I think would compliment your white cabinets better. Notice how thick these counters are. Takes away the laminate look, IMO.

      Linda, I think something in a whiter or a much darker color would be nice with your white cabinets. These colors you have chosen are maybe too in the middle, if that makes any sense. These are a few from Formica, one in a brown, one in a grey-white and one in a grey-brown-pink. If you're not interested,I won't be offended. Just think it needs a little oomph :)

      I really don't want white countertops. I have them now and they are a bear to keep clean.

      I like the more veined look that judyg pictured, looks a little more "expensive", I could look for something like that if you'd like, or just the speckled granite looks if that's what you'd prefer.

      I really like the Madras Indian Slate. Let's say I have the white cabinets, the Madras Indian Slate countertop, and the Heart of Palm wall color. What color floor would you suggest?

      Here's a close up of the Indian slate, luckily there are many browns in it. I'll post these Armstrong floors and then narrow down a few for your daughter to check

      This is the madras Indian with two of the Armstrong vinyl options in Bolivian walnut, a dark brown and a medium orange brown.

      The kitchen adjoins to the dinning room that has a dark laminate wood floor. The small hallway leads to the living room that has a real wood floor. I plan on running the same flooring in the kitchen and the hallway. Since both of the adjoining rooms have wood floors, would a "wood looking" vinyl be too much or would I be okay if I go with the lighter color floor (the maple color on the bottom right)?

      Here's the maple, not the best contrast/compliment to the countertop. Maybe your daughter can see if any of these laminates are close to your existing darker wood floor and you could closely match it?

      If the existing wood laminate is dark, and it's visually connected to the new flooring, I don't think I'd go that light with the new flooring, but keep it either dark or mid range, that worked with the existing flooring. I agree that something that would give you more of a contrast with the white cabinets would work well for the countertop. Perhaps something of a similar darkness and shade might work well for both the countertop and flooring. Perhaps something in the medium range that mforr posted above with the medium domani.

      My daughter and I are heading up to Lowe's to speak with the kitchen designer. I have printed all of your suggestions and will see what he advised (he has already been to my house to measure and is familiar with my current flooring situation).

      I want to tell you all that I am thrilled beyond measure to have stumbled upon this website and to have connected with you all. The advice you are giving me is more than I could have wished for!

      The cabinets have been ordered and will be delivered next month. The madras Indian countertop has been ordered as well. My kids loved the hearts of palm paint color and we have decided that with the help of an experienced neighbor, tile flooring is a better option. Do any of you disagree with tile flooring for the kitchen?

      What do you think of these two? Would they go with the countertop? I have only chosen these tiles based on the description of the color and am not sure if either of these pulls any of the colors from the countertop, and is also complimentary of the hearts of palm paint color.

      The first one is very grey, so not so good. The second is better, but very pale. What tile manufacturer are you looking at? Perhaps I could look at the companions to these?

      If you're going with the Indian madras countertop, an option might be going with a tile that is closer to that in color and darkness. I know that you had mentioned that the dining room was adjacent and was a dark wood laminate. Is that very visible from the kitchen? You had mentioned that the living room had wood floors. Is that visually connected to where the tile will be? If so, how dark is the wood flooring?

      The dining room and the living room are both visible from the kitchen. The dining room is a dark wood laminate and the living room is a medium wood color. Both rooms are visible from the kitchen but the dining room and kitchen are not visible to one another.

      Considering that the kitchen is kind of a "connector" room between the dining room and living room and visible to both, I think a tile that is more of a medium dark which is what your countertop is, that would work with the shades of the countertop and adjacent floorings might be your best bet. Are you looking for either vinyl or ceramic tiles specifically?

      The bottom two in each grouping is your countertop and wall color. The top two in each group is two different views of same tile. In all I showed 4 different tiles. All go very well with your counter, wall and cabinet choices, they are just in different tones to go with all the tones in counter, some lighter, some darker. Have your daughter take a look today and see if she approves :)

      Definitely choose porcelain over ceramic. Ceramic finished is only baked on...should you drop something you will see the chip. Porcelain color goes through the tile.
