Bathroom remodel layout help

I posted last year, but we put off the remodel while we finished up our basement. We are working with our contractor and plan to get started after Christmas.

Our bathroom is 96”x142”. I’ve attached a proposed layout. We are taking out a tub that was along the window wall. The toilet and shower moved up three feet to where the tub was.

I’m thinking of a small makeup vanity by the shower where I could sit and blow dry my hair, etc. For storage, I was thinking of two small areas of open shelving to store towels, in addition to the 72” vanity (ours is currently 6 feet, so we’d gain another foot of storage, plus drawers for efficien. We have a closet in there now that is a void where half used bottles of nail polish go to die. Our neighboring bathroom has two large closets for storing big items like toilet paper, cleaning products.

Our shower will have a bump out on t

he exterior wall to make sure the plumbing is insulated.

Are there any better layout ideas? The designer our contractor worked with didn’t provide much help. She thought to nix the vanity and add a super large closet (there’s 5 feet of space to use in that corner.)

I’d appreciate any help!

This is one floor plan I suggested to a friend and she built the exact same way and she loves it. The only difference is that she does not have a make-up mirror to see the back of her head but it seems that she is ok without one. I know I would miss it. I see two options to place a make-up mirror:

1- You can place it close to where the bathroom door is. See little square for the location where I would put the mounting bracket. This would allow you to stand between the counter top and the make-up mirror. You would also need to place your sinks distant from each other because this dictate the location of each mirror and it needs to be placed where you can see the back of your head. I do prefer to have distant sinks anyway because of the longer continuous counter top between the two sinks and also you can have wider drawers in the middle of your vanity.

2- An other idea would be to mount the make-up mirror inside one door of the cabinet and put another mirror on the inside of the other door. You could stand between the two mirrors. You just need to open the doors. You would have to reserve an empty shelf inside the cabinet to drop your hair dryer and brush while your are doing your hair. You would also need an electrical outlet close by.

Suzanne, thanks so much for the input! I was away for the weekend (go Irish) and didn’t see your response. You raise some really great points. I didn’t even think to make the vanities narrower, not sure why. That will help, I was worried about it being a little tight.

I would like a place to sit and blow out/curl my hair. I’m pretty young but my back get cranky if I stand on a tile floor too long doing my hair. I like the idea of a mirror to see the back of my hair, maybe I can add it to the left of the vanity on the shower wall?

If I can, I prefer to hide the extendable mirror. I think if you mount the bracket where I placed the red square and keep your mirror folded on the side of the shelves, it should work. When the mirror is extended towards the large vanity, you can stand between it and your make-up vanity and you will see the back of your head (given that the mirror above your make-up vanity is large).
