I've been using the same mix, minus alcohol. Although, I did use alcohol when fighting scale bugs but didn't think it was an important part of it, but more for dissolving the oil. I will keep using the same regimen then.

While it is best to get rid of thrips or any bugs, I do not think those dark spots are caused by them.

Lantana, thank you for the pictures. The damage on your plant seems to be around the leaf edges mostly and I have a few leaves that look like they got nibbled on the edge as well. Wonder if that's the thrip damage, too.
