Master Bedroom: Bedding and decorating, Please help

I kind of threw our bedroom together 3 years ago when we moved in. Lately it's been bugging me. I based it off a hotel room we had really liked but now it just feels too sterile. The furniture and curtains will be staying. I don't have a very big budget and would like to make a plan so I don't waste money by buying the wrong thing. I'm thinking a white comforter, art above the bed (maybe?), and art to replace the current art. The current white bedspread is a family heirloom and needs to come off as soon as possible. My favorite colors are red and teal with touches of yellow. The first pic is how the room was originally decorated The others are trials with pillows from the living room to see if that was a good direction to go.

I like your room and your instincts. The white comforter looks better than the quilt, I think because the quilt seems traditional but the comforter looks more contemporary. The blue, terra cotta and zebra striped pillows look great. The quilted one I think does not. I wouldn't make too many changes, but I found some art and lamps that might work. Good luck!

I think your instinct to warm it up with red is a good idea, but you might want to consider opting for the more orangey reds (rather than blue reds) because orange is a great contrast with blue. For example, to my eyes the big flowery pillow with the orangey tones looks great against the blue, but the solid red pillow (which is more blue-red) looks a bit hard and flat against the blue. I'd go for orangey reds, oranges and perhaps a little yellow mixed in.

I guess I'm really not ready to paint the feature wall... it's a faux treatment done with a glaze. unless you all think it really needs to be done.

The only pillows that can stay in this room are the zebra and teal and the teal is past its prime. I would say I was going for farmhouse/vintage. I love the vintage chenille but not sure that's a good idea with a cat. I also love the look of the kantha quilts and thought about one of them for the end of the bed.

You might want to check Kohls or Walmart for bedding, they have nice price now.

86 that teal color and paint all the walls in the room this color. Take on a Zen style for the bedroom that promotes rest and calmness.

I don’t think you will accomplish “farmhouse vintage” with that feature wall. It is great color if you are leaning toward mid century modern.

The black bed and your gray rug could be farmhouse, however.

hmmm I can kinda see where you are all coming from on the accent wall. When I told my husband what you all where saying, he right away said it was too formal for farmhouse, but it also wasn't where I was headed with the room 3 years ago. The wall color can't change in the near future due to physical limitations. Should I work with it or ignore it? The furniture is black and lightly distressed with red showing. I like the blue paisley pillow. it's not quite the right blue though. I would be happy to sew my own pillow covers as well.

I had thought about a macramé hanging above the bed. Not sure if I should find art to replace the lady painting. She was a gift from my dad while we were living in Africa. She doesn't have any frame, it's just a black sheet with the painting on it. I put it up because that's what you see when you walk down the hall. It looks really boring otherwise.

I have teal/aqua/grey in various strengths/shades in my bedrrom. I like to think of it as a beachy/spa space. Driftwood goes, well (I have driftwood garland on a teal tray as an accessory) and plenty of big modern art.

I love your room obviously lol. Especially your African art. Add some white/grey/driftwood. It will look lovely.

I think if you change your lampshades to orange it will give a nice warm light to your room, then you can add some red-orange throw pillows or blanket. An art work above your bed would be nice.

Here is a lighter quilt with your favorite colors, price is affordable too. Not sure what the bed size is, but it’s available in Queen too.

Well, you can’t “ignore” a feature wall that bold. It’s also not going to lend itself to farmhouse style. So if you can’t change it, I think you have to work with it. Any chance of changing the bed to something lighter in style and color?

Maybe one of these original artworks would add some texture and contrast to your wall. Here are some ideas to ponder. Good luck and enjoy decor !

I actually like the feature wall and the curtains, but think everything else in the room fights them instead of works with them. The furniture, ceiling fan, quilt, pillows etc, all feel pretty standard farmhouse/suburban master bedroom, while the accent wall and curtains feel like they could belong either in a beach house in cape cod OR a beach house in Cali/miami. The cape cod direction can work with classic furniture like yours, but the furniture all needs to be white. The white quilt would work with that style. The cali/miami direction needs white modern furniture. But the heavy dark bed isn't working with the blue wall for me. Not sure what else to tell you!

Thank you for your comments... so if I would plan to paint the teal wall sometime in the future, what would you recommend for bedding then? I really like the quilt @Molly posted. I also like the idea of changing the lampshades to red. possibly even recovering the ones I have? I don't have any desire to go in the direction of beach. It looks good in the right house but I live in the middle of snowy Canada:)

The quilt is available on Wayfair Canada and also comes as a throw if you only want something at the end of the bed. It’s the Thalia by Greenland.
