Introduce the FULL SUN gradually though, or they WILL burn. My tropical Ficus have to come inside in the Autumn (NJ/Zone 7), where they are in a southern exposure, but indoor light levels are MUCH lower than outside (EVEN IN OUTDOOR SHADE!).

Any sun light that is passing through household windows is “indirect”. People often see “bright indirect light” and think they should shelter their plant away from and sunlighy, unfortunately a person’s idea of bright light and a plant’s idea of bright light are quite different. When kept indoors, these should be right up in front of your brightest, south facing window without any blinds or curtains obstructing the light. They also favor being outdoors during the spring/summer (when night time temps are steadily above 50 F), but they should be slowly acclimated to the direct sun, like others said.

The confusion arises because the original culture information comes from a warm tropical place. But when same plants are brought to a much higher latitude, where the intensity of the sun is dramatically weakened, more exposure is needed to achieve the same cumulative amount of light and maintain the same appearance. Many people in tropical areas do not realize how much of a difference there is between, for example, Panama & Pennsylvania. A plant that thrives in the shade in Panama might need a few hours of sun shining right on it in PA to achieve the same cumulative level of exposure. Anyone who has taken a trip to a place that is significantly lower in latitude than their home probably noticed the increased intensity of the sun. And during winter, there are so few hours of it per day than in a tropical location.

Large, S-facing windows are great! Almost any woody entity would love to be next to those windows. Enjoy!
