Orange Varie...an interesting development

So, I bought this little beauty from Komoriya back in 2017 and I planted it in my "typical" free draining mix that everyone else is planted in and sure enough, it started to rot and my heart sunk. I was able to peel away the rotted tissue and by the time I was done, I had thumbnail sized bulb and and an even smaller offset but I was determined to save them. After the cleaning, dusting with sulfer and rooting hormone, I potted it in a mix of half pumice and half free draining mix. I was so surprised to see that it started to come back to life, then I started thinking "Maybe these variegated hippies like the new mix better"? Now I have a bunch of variegated little ones coming along and I'm seriously thinking of using this new mix on them exclusively. Has anyone else had this "revelation" with their variegated hippies?
