Too many cooks will surly spoil the broth. Try wiping surface with mineral spirits followed by a coat of shellac then another coat of poly.

Thanks! Do I just wipe on the mineral spirits? I did that earlier today and now the table looks streaky. And just out of curiosity, why shellac? I am still learning and unfamiliar with shellac.

1. Shellac can adhere where other finishes can't. Once shellac cover's the surface impurities are sealed beneath and other finish can be applied. I wouldn't apply shellac to the cloudy surface. If the wax contain's silicon you will need special solvent to remove it then strip to bare wood.
