Whatever you do, do NOT paint the countertops! We moved into a fixer upper with a painted countertop and it's the absolute WORST. I stains and damages easily, looks bad and beat up, and that's after four months of regular use (seemed to be freshly painted when the house was put up for sale).

I think your kitchen is nice. I'd start with decluttering and looking at smaller projects/purchases like new light fixtures and stools and other decor.

Couple of quick suggestions: colorful rugs; new stools with colorful, upholstered seats; and replacing a few uppers with open shelves. Your UCL also looks very warm. Maybe look into cooler lights.

Glad to hear about the countertops! I’ll just live with it! Definitely need to de clutter . I just repainted the barstools but do think patterned ones would look good.... hmmmmm. Light fixtures also new so stuck with those!

Don't paint the countertops, but do save $$$ to replace them--doesn't have to be granite and all those expensive countertops, but maybe just a "confetti" laminate in white, gold, blue. Or as budget allows light colored countertops and rippled light subway tile backsplash and below cabinet lights. You could do below-cabinet-lights now for more brightness.

General advice around here is to minimize what's on the counter, which may mean putting in very affordable Rev-a-Shelves pullouts in lower cabinets to stash things like paper towel holder and whatever else you don't use daily.

That said:

--Paint the backs of your existing open shelves and keep only a few beautiful things on them.

--Remove everything over top cabinets to cut down on visual clutter.

--Consider a mix of open shelves in same finish as cabinet or white if you have nice, matching daily dishes and matching glassware that gets regularly washed.

You have a pretty kitchen and be glad the counters are not orange:) That sage green is actually still popular, though not so much on counters. I agree not to paint the counters. You would have less functional counters with a limited lifespan before they would have to be replaced whether you could it afford it or not. You do appear to have a nice amount of space and cabinetry.

Start first with a good clean out. If you think you can live with a few less cabinets, remove the 4 to the left of the sink. Either leave the wall plain and put up some art or decor, or do a few shelves. I usually advise to only use the bottom self for frequently used dishes while uppers for decor - and don't go overboard. Too much will look messy and cluttered. This is not necessary, but would help you feel less wood around you.

It looks like you are moving to stainless appliances. Changing out the over the range microwave for a pretty stainless vent hood would be pretty. You could look at removing the microwave and above cabinets for a stainless T vent, but it will mess with the crown molding - might need a carpenter to assess that. That would decrease the wood a bit, but even a stainless vent under the cabinets would be an improvement over the black microwave.

You have a nice, functional kitchen. Start putting a little $ aside every month if possible. That is what I did, and while it took awhile, I eventually was able to get new countertops and an apron front sink.

Do you have any additional pictures? Kind of hard to see all the cabinet configurations, etc.

Lovely kitchen :) Have you considered adding some more lighting because really everything looks swell! Maybe some rope lighting above and some under cabinet lighting (sorry if you already have this...). I would also add some in-cabinet lighting in your glass shelves. You may find these minor changes are enough.

I don't mind your countertops. I could definitely live with them for 5 years :)

You sound like a person who wants permission to paint her cabinets. I'm happy to give it, but it's a monumental job for a DIY project and a substantial expense to have done professionally. If you think you're doing something else in five years, I'd stick with this. You could look for nickel knobs to lighten the feel in a minor way and maybe give you some understated bling.

You could even switch to pulls for the feeling of a facelift without painful undertakings...

I like the ideas on a hardware change. Unless the cabinets are in poor shape (doesn't look it) I would not paint them. If I had money and time to paint, I'd rather add another window instead :) I'd take the cabinets down on the left side of the sink and add another huge window!! Ahhh light. I really can't get enough windows and should just live in a greenhouse!

You’ve already decluttered which made a huge difference! If you’re going to keep the cabinets long term you could paint them a light color. That would definitely break up all the wood. Keep in mind if you diy it’s a big job, and it could get expensive if you hire it out. If you like the color, changing out the pendant lights would also make a difference and be more cost effective.

Your decluttering made a huge difference. Besides colorful stools, buy colored accessories. My kitchen was an oak I didn’t like, with a beige corian countertop. While awaiting the money and time to reface it, I bought a lot of red and white accessories (cushions for the chairs in r&w buffalo check, red m/w which we still have and love, r&w canisters, lots of red and white kitchen towels and oven mitts). They cheered up the place tremendously. And I love them with the newly refaced Ivory kitchen.

Do you use your island/bar area? Depending upon how it is constructed, you might remove it and replace it with a different kind of island or work surface, perhaps a salvaged dresser, painted a different color, with a granite remnant top. Just a thought to make the island more “unique.” Your kitchen is already lovely!

Thank you! We actually do use the island a lot. It’s where we eat most of our meals and it works great for holiday entertaining.

You could consider just changing the counter on the island alone. It really does look a ton better just decluttered

You do have a lovely kitchen...I get so sad when I read how many people want to paint their cabinets...I happen to love my oak kitchen..

I only have minor suggestions as it looks great to me, but I'm wondering if you use your desk? If not, I would move the mixer over there (and maybe add a couple canisters) and have that as a kind of mixing station...

I love the red in there, and if you don't want to paint the back of your open shelving, you might consider some peel and stick wallpaper, or cover some foamboard in red...you just kind of squish it to fit the back.

Or perhaps a roman blind with red in it...you can even diy it.

Declutter, put flowers on the countertop and be happy until you can afford to change it . The lamps ...they are all different ? ..perhaps start with the lamps ?...

You have beautiful cabinets, please don’t paint them. I know it’s very trendy right now to paint over but unless you spend a ton of time and $ truly doing it right it will be sticky, chipped, and cheap looking in no time.

I would consider changing the microwave to one that properly fits the space. Whirlpool has one that is 12” high that would fit the space better.

I would put new sheet laminate on top of the laminate, at least on the island. Very inexpensive DYI that could make a huge difference.

About five years ago, I used Faux Granite in a rental kitchen. Fooled a bunch of contractors who at first sight seriously thought it was granite. It also held up beautifully despite less than careful tenants.

They also sent me a bunch of small free samples because there were some designs that one couldn't order as a sample (several marbles).

You could paint/stain the legs and supports of the island in a darker wood tone to reduce the amount of the one wood color. The metal chair in the bend of the island looks like it might be in the way of the traffic flow. I would move to the wide end of the island. You already have a bit of art, but if you have more wall space, you can add another piece. And if you add a runner rug where you stand to do your prep, it will cover up some of the floor, again reducing the amount of matching wood visible.

I love the red bar stool idea. And just changing the color of your island. Doing little steps that make you happy will be more economical than anything large (like re-sheeting the countertop).
