70s entryway needs help

We moved into this home that was built in 1972 and and I am trying to figures out the best way to make it feel more modern. The walls are cedar strips that are rough: I get splinters when I hang pictures. What would you do to fix it up? It looks into the dining room and a very dark living room with built ins. Looking for good suggestions as we are having a hard time differentiating what is cool and timeless and what really dates the home. Also, should we:
paint the walls
stain the walls
leave the walls

I would leave the “pickled” (was the adjective used) walls as is because it works witt the flagstone floor and iron railings. It is what it is and to try to turn the house into something it isn’t would ruin it.

I suggest you concentrate on the rooms open to this entry.

Done right, you could have a stunner.

Think reclaimed wood to compliment the walls and a white sectional.

I like the house. Sounds like you have rough sawn cedar on the walls. Very casual vibe and that can be nice if you paint the walls white. Consider it like a 'farmhouse' style. Replace the carpet with wood or tile.

See images below, paint everything white and make sure you have great accent lighting.

I agree with JudyG this house could be a stunner. A lot depends on which way you want to go. I think the stairs could be redone with something other than carpet (maybe they are nice wood underneath!) As to walls, hard to tell from the photos what you have. I guess I'd be a bit more careful hanging pictures but would be unlikely to paint cedar.

Would love to see more photos of the adjoining rooms and close ups.

The carpet upstairs is only in the hallway. Most of the floor throughout is parquet flooring which makes me think of a church basement. Beyond the cedar, most walls have an orange peel texture added to them. See below additional images to the living room to the left of the entry, the dining room and den that are below. The furniture is not mine- it's staging furniture from the realtor but it shows the space off the best.

No wonder you purchased this home, it is gorgeous. I might be inclined to get to know it better before I change it.

    Are the furnishings yours?

Agree with Beverly about staining the parquet floor…perfect suggestion.

And now, that I see the rest of the house, I cancel my reclaimed wood suggestion.

I love your house. I agree with BeverlyFLADeziner about getting the parquet refinished if possible. Cannot wait to see what you do with this!
