Vanity installed wrong location help!!!

We had our vanity installed, granite cut and installed and we realize now that the vanity either shouldve been longer or not butted up against the wall. The space between the vanity and tub is very large and we dont know what to do? Granite was not beveled on left side so moving vanity at this point is not really an option. What can we put to fill space

You could invest in a matching tall linen cabinet with arched or flush toe, furniture toe and crown to make it look like a piece of furniture OR you could add a cushion bench and a couple of hooks to hang your robe while bathing OR you could get a hand painted piece of furniture and dress it with a silver tray, large candle, vase with flowers OR you could add a drop down makeup area w/cushion seat in a pop of color!

Awkward, the vanity looks a bit "lost". Perhaps adding a bench with a scrollwork back, see if that helps.

I DO NOT UNDERSTAND. I am sorry to say that, but I do not. Where was the plan, the drawing of the bath? At the point of demo or well before that?!

For me? This would be a do over. Seli it. Do a new vanity, and get it right. Is there flooring underneath? The plumbing didn't tell you what and where and how it would be located? I am sooooo sorry. But. I truly don't understand how this stuff happens. Makes me cry.

The one thing I would NOT do is attempt to lipstick a pig. Make it right. You have an opprtunity inside the visual.........yeah.......... not good. Needless to say, I disagree with above. The sinks and plumbing need to move.

Actually it looks very nice and it's also nice to have so much space in the bathroom. I would buy a storage unit, maybe glass, where you could store your new towels and other bathroom accessories such as soaps and lotions. Those items could add some color into the room and would be very practical. I don't think I would want the tub too close to the vanity because there would be no room to towel off. That space could also accommodate a wastebasket or a small stool.

It is unfortunate but make the beat of it. Buy an antique cabinet and fill it will towels and decor. Include item on top of the hutch for height

I simply can't take it. It appears you have AT LEAST a "missing" 30 inches. Space to towel off? There is plenty of space! I urge you to fix it. Don't buy more stuff to make it worse. Someone is looking for a nice vanity.......and so are you. With more space, more storage and one appropriate to the bath.

If this is the BIGGEST MISTAKE you make in this life, financially, design wise or any other way? A great life it shall be.

While you are fixing? Get white..........: ) Custom to the space.and spread out so you aren't bumping elbows while you brush your teeth.

This should have been a long luxurious vanity to share. I could never live with such an obvious mistake. I don't really understand how this occurred if you took the time to view your drawings.

Right now your cheapest option is adding the linen cabinets, but it seems oppressive in the space.

See that open shelf separation? You have room : ) No matter the style. DRAW it out. To the inch with a cabinet maker. Worth all the future enjoyment. No elbows

you'll be so happy to have more elbow room between 2 people at the sinks, when one person isnt stuck in the corner.

Might want think that out first there i a lot involved. Plumbing has to be moved. Lighting in ceiling has to be moved. You now need additional outlets to be up to code. I agree with adding a custom made cabinet or leave alone. I bet in person it isn't as big of a deal. Thats an easy $8k mistake if you redo.

We even amuse ourselves over a drink of wine at a bar?

    Yeah....

No no no no. If you are going to the trouble of a redo the vanity should either have one sink only or be much longer. dont just move the vanity, get a larger varity. The desire for 2 sinks can not be greater than the NEED for counter space! I didn't need two sinks so I didn't bother with that (we share well) but I did need counter space so we did one sink offset fot the most counter space.

I've had two sinks in some hotel rooms and often wondered what I'm supposed to do with the second.

Lol. Couldn't get a couple of those comments out of my head. In case anyone wants to know, it's 6:37 am on Sunday . I am about to web file/pay my sales tax well in advance of the 12/20 due date. Then, I will do some invoicing to collect some fairly vast client dollars, and then head to the gym, and then to brunch. If that's okay. I may play on here.......if that's okay. I may pass out some sound advice. Or not : ) I do have one quick question.

Do those who hold the pros in various degrees of disdain, realize that Houzz and the photos that often inspire the baths.....the kitchens and other spaces they attempt to mime, wouldn't exist without the pro's and their contributed photos? Okay. tax time.

I could see a tall shelving unit, like a bookcase but perhaps deeper, finished like the vanity. While I’m not fond of the wood finish, the room needs something to bring the darkness up. Right now, everything is happening in the lower third of the room.

    Hi Ginamuto,

How much space do you have between the end of the vanity and the edge of the tub with the vanity in the current location and how long is the current vanity?

You've got what looks to be a really lovely washroom here and I think it can be perfect but you really need to listen to the advice you've been given here and purchase a longer vanity and then you can centre it on that wall. You'll need some open space between the tub and vanity and a little open space at the other end of the vanity (closest to the wall) means you'll have room for a towel rack there and also a spot to tuck a small waste bin in the corner so that it is somewhat out of sight.

Those changes will make your room really lovely and bring back the symmetry that is lacking at this point.

Yes, this will mean moving plumbing and lighting and buying a whole new vanity, but it looks like you've spent a fair amount already on a really nice bathroom with very nice finishes. Don't stop now by stubbornly trying to hold onto something that clearly isn't working (and obviously causing you distress since you came to Houzz to ask for help).

I like your floor tile and the tub and shower look great.

I think you could also look for a vanity that is a little more ornate in style. Those mirrors you've chosen are really lovely but to me they are more luxe looking than the current vanity.

Look at this example from Pottery Barn. This one is 72" and I think likely you have even more space than this one. It comes with or without the hutch but do you see how this is a bit more luxe looking than the one you've got?

See how some of these larger vanities, they are modular pieces. You pick the pieces that work for your needs and they all fit together. See this for something luxe looking (similar mirrors to yours too) where different base pieces make up a longer length vanity, then a nice piece of stone or solid surface on top and it is gorgeous.

Do yourself a favour and make a decision that in the long run is going to make you happy, not always feeling like you made a compromise because you already bought the current vanity. Sell it on Kijiji and chalk it up to lesson learned.

I think Jan was just being colorful. Her advice sometimes includes an excess of honesty (haha) but it is almost always excellent. Some (pros and non) definitely come on here to crap on people's homes which is totally unacceptable, "free" or not.

I for one enjoy @Jan Moyer’s expertise. I may or may not agree, but it is always good to have a true expert to learn from. Miss those that have recently been lost to the Houzz community.

Gotta ask, Do you get a lot of overspray when you use the shower? It looks a little narrow.

I doubt they have used it yet.........there is no glass...YET : ) But it is no narrower than the tub next to it and folks routinely shower in those with a curtain.

@ginaluto, one of the best PROS on Houzz, Jan, is commenting on your thread in which you asked for free advice. Rather than putting her down for pointing out YOUR mistake, you should be thanking her for her wise commentary. She not telling you what you want to hear? Then get off Houzz and go PAY for your pro advice.

Do think about where you're going to hang your towels -- even with a new longer vanity, you may want to hang a couple of long towel bars in that space by the tub. Otherwise you're going to be fighting to get them dry between showers!

    (p.s.) nice mix of finishes

Thanks for all the comments, good, bad, harsh etc, we appreciate it! This is actually a kids bath so we won’t be extending the vanity. They will have to deal it! We are moving the vanity off that left wall to a more central location, keeping a bit of space between tub and vanity for hanging towels, hamper, etc. we are going to put a picture above tub to fill space and possibly some greenery on left side of vanity. The glass is not yet installed on shower. Unfortunately with the company we used...we removed a closet in the bathroom last minute and put the vanity there. The vanity had already been ordered. We really really wish the contractor would have brought this to our attention but he did not, and we are not contractors, interior design etc. we are disappointed but it’s not the end of the world the project is going to end on a high note. Glad we can do this before sconces were up etc. Now, I’m wondering how to close this thread so I stop getting notifications!? Thanks again!

A kids bath-that's a differnt story! You do need storage though don't you? The linen tower now seems more worth it than moving the whole thing and leaving dead space in the left.

ginamuto, you can't close a thread. Someone may find this and give you advice three years from now, but you can turn off notifications. On your account page, under Advanced Settings, I think.

Jan and Sophie are my two favorite pros, who give advice when people ask for help. Not because they tell people what they want to hear but instead offer a blunt assessment of what they need to hear. I don’t always agree but ignore their advice at your own peril.

    Not to belabor the issue..........WHAT exactly was "p _ _ _ _ _ "?

"we are going to bite the bullet, move plumbing, get new granite and move the vanity"

"Best decision EVER! Good luck to you and Happy Holidays. Ask for that tape measure in your stocking? lol"

I think what is indeed "p_ _ _ _ _" is the ginning up of a concept that was never even there. That, is indeed very P. Even if it may refer to past commentary, from a pro no longer on the site. Can't imagine what that may have wrought.............: )

Jan my guess is that you are the "blunt and refreshing" jpp mentioned but I could be wrong. I've seen you bend toward hyperbole and maybe even the apocalyptic (lol) on occasion but I'm not sure I have ever seen you get p!ssy. Not that I think you aren't capable of it :D ;)

there are some expressions i would be happy if i never saw here again, for they have grown so very tiresome and were never all that clever to begin with:

    "Lipstick on a pig,"

    "ignore her at your peril,"

    and, even when completely true,

"hire a Person of Design Talent," is so predictable and condescending.

  • PRO

I don't mind being ignored! In the end its your house, someone's house!

As to lipstick on a pig or any other descriptives? I can see how it may make one cringe!

What does make me cringe is a "love fest" leading someone to waste money, while never arriving at a pleasing or functional solution .

So.... perhaps a good analogy is the doctor who says " this is going to hurt"

versus your good friend who may say" oh ! I had a bump that looked like that and it was nothing!!" Reassurance is great. But not always .

    .............

Agreed Jan! A little tact is nice, and without some colorful personalities it would get dull here pretty quick!

Since this is a kids bathroom, I would consider leaving the sink and adding a make up table. Especially if there are girls involved!!
