Just put a rug on top of the carpet. Could be oriental, modern, whatever! A deep maroon oriental in all that empty space would be fab if you like traditional. You could probably pick up a little of the latte color from the bench, too.

I too love color, but starting with a more neutral palette will make it easier to add the color/s of your choice.

I like your idea for the trio of canvases. I also like how colorful they are. I would suggest the artwork first then pull the colors you like best from the canvases and incorporate them in the room. For example, you could do blue accents, blue & yellow accents, perhaps orange. Good luck!

I am not sure if you are keeping the bed or not, but I think that when you have a lone color in the room in any amount you need to add more of said color to make the color less outstanding....so with your bed being black/ebony have you thought about more of the dark color in night stand or frames for art or curtain rods or lamps or lamp shades.....

Here are three examples, dark bed, dark legs on foot stool, dark prints inside wood frames, and dark cabinet....there may be more if you look under more info under picture..

Bed, mirror over bed, window painted a version of charcoal, beams, curtains rods and leading trim on curtains is dark, too....small things that make the dark less dark if that makes sense.

I see what you mean, Susan. Thank you. We are not wedded to the bed - it was initially a placeholder from IKEA (we moved across country and didn't bring any furniture) while we were dealing with bigger issues in the new house. We're kind of neutral about it and it's held up well. It's better if we can style around it just because it's one less thing to pick out but it doesn't have to be the limiting factor.

I think the bed is nice! just wanted to comment on it having something similar in color to relate to so it looks planned and not a showroom floor....haha.

Susan - I have the black cabinet but we moved it across the room by the sliding barn door so it doesn't really relate to the other side of the room with the bed. It didn't have a great spot over by the bed anyway. I have been collecting art ideas for several weeks now with black to try to pull the black around around the room but our style is too much all over the place and none of the ones we like have anything to do with each other and I haven't hit exactly on the right proportions in terms of size/placement.

I just can't seem to pick which side of the line I want to be on: just pick something and finish the room "good enough" vs. spend more time focusing on how to make it nice. In the meantime, we just live with half painted/half primed walls and standby furniture and now it's been a few years, even! It's not like we are kids just starting out, either.

Instead of putting 3 pictures over the bed try the big map over one dresser and the 3 over the other or some mix of those.

This has all been very helpful! I appreciate all the different perspectives and fresh views of what is possible with this room. Because of the inspiration pic below of the 3 pics spreading out the space around the bed, I think I got stuck with that limitation. I'm going to play around more with sketching out options. I like the idea of the map picture hanging above the bed. You could swap it's current frame for a black one too

I think you are almost there. Consider a few ‘pairs’ for the room. A pair of black frames, a pair of throw pillows with black grey tan and white in them, a pair of black lampshades or lamps! If you use black you need enough to counter all the beige. Beige is dominant so now you need another color/texture to diminish it and then possibly another minor color/texture to balance that. A lengthy process but you are making progress. Keep going!

Thank you for the strategies to counter the (unexpected/unwanted) beigeness. You are right, Susan, that our dog is the best part! We definitely love him more than anything we own.

You know what goes great with blue? Orange. So maybe add some more blue pieces and some orange. Try some blue and orange pillows. A blanket that has some color. Then add some colorful lamps. You'll be close to done.
