I don't think this room is all that small ;-) My main living room at our former house wasn't much larger. It's not so much about size as how you arrange the furniture...and of course the furniture that's being used. Something you can do that costs nothing is to pull the seating furniture away from the walls. You'll be amazed at how that seems to make the room look bigger. You'll not even lose that much room to move around...and probably in this room, space isn't as big a factor as how the room gets utilized.

I think the floors are beautiful as well as the windows. The bones of the room are good, it's just so much of the wood furniture blending into the floors, (being the same shade) the only things that stand out are the curtains & the fireplace. What other colors do you like? I was thinking curtains in a red, or other bright shade if you don't like red - would brighten things up. If you had the curtains made up, or can sew yourself, you could set aside enough fabric to make a mantle sash & a tablecloth for the round table in the corner of the room (next to the tv). A rug with some of that same contrasting color - whatever you decide on - could tie it all together and give some more warmth & structure to the room. That rug sitting at where the 2 couches connect, along with a little cocktail table might make the space feel more cozy. Same with some throw pillows for the couches, which I think are lovely by the way.

I meant throw pillows in a shade to match whatever accent color you pick - the pillows you have are lovely but fade into the couch itself.

You need move substantial lamps. What you have is too small. I'd like to see a small area rug and colorful art on the walls.

I agree about moving the sofas away from the walls a couple of inches. How about switching the love seat and the couch?

Can you use the table in the corner as a coffee table?

I was thinking splashes of brighter colors like Jackie too. The floors are such a beautiful feature, but an area rug could make if feel more cozy.

Hey Nicole, whatever happened to your backyard project that you posted on here? OK for this room, I would get a area rug and then declutter the fireplace with less stuff on it and use one piece of art above it. Also, the lamps need to be bigger. This is a nice space and the floors are beautiful.

What a lovely get away! A few minor updates and this room could be fabulous. The TV console needs to be darker the room needs some contrast. The lamp between the couches needs to be larger and more interesting. An area rug pulling in some color with some coordinating pillows on the couches would bring it all together. Great room, just needs a few finishing touches.

Nicole, this is a very pretty room. What is your style? What do you want to keep and what are you willing to let go? What colours do you like? Do you want to keep the panels/valance? How much do you want to spend?

Thanks everyone for your input and great ideas. Tennis anyone - backyard is still a work in progress but my attention now is on the inside because its winter here!!! I like the idea of an area rug and have in the past had a few different ones in here ( just none that I really loved!). The curtains probably need to stay as they were quite expensive! They are a dark green with a hint of teal here and there. Should I pick up on that colour to use as an accent? Also I think I need darker wood pieces to tie in with the fireplace? The room really is tiny so although I hate lounges Against walls I don't know if it will work but I am going to give it a try. Yes... Bigger lamp Is a definite! Loving your help thank you so much.

I think you have a great room to start with, and it would be helpful if you had a color theme to use as your guide. Its is great place to start and gives you the confidence to know that what you choose, with using a theme, will all coordinate together. Switch the TV and the sofa. That way your sofa will face the fireplace which is automatically the focal point of the room. I would do that first, then concentrate on adding some art and some color.

How about putting the TV next to the fireplace and shifting the furniture so they face both? I am posting some throw pillows with color and pattern... How about a coffee table and an area rug for the floor as well as a coffee table? (The curtains were an oops)

Nicole if you are keeping your draperies then consider a shade from the draperies on the wall and on your rug. The colours on the computer screen are translating totally different than the swatch you attached above. So to create the same feel select the darker shade from your draperies and then co-ordinate from there.

I suggest pillows with pattern, and perhaps multicolored.... what color are the draperies? I noticed you had a lot of photos, have you ever thought of spraying the frames all one color and hanging them together? (a smaller version the example I have posted?) Are you happy with the changes, do you feel the room is coming together?

looking at the updated pics, love your room already. liked the before too.. now it's more welcoming.
if you ever colour your walls, the dullest, lightest blue from your curtains would be best.
A tree decal would be great for your wall above the tv..... it's one huge wall! that's why am recommending a decal..
cushions look fine in this pic.. maybe you just need to add one blue/teal cushion with a flower printed on it would suffice. love your curtains.

Much better already, I also think a gallery wall would be great! Probably opposite from the tv and I also agree the wall behind the tv needs some sprucing up! and a great printed pillow would do wonders to liven up the space. maybe a large poster style picture behind the tv?

I love the arrangement with the TV on the wall by the fireplace. I'm not a fan of art on a TV wall; it ends up being a bunch of competitive squares. But I think these birch tree wall decals would be perfect on that wall, they're inexpensive, and can be ordered online:

Hi, there is nothing wrong with this room. I note you have curtains/drapes already up. I would pick one or two colours of them and accessorise with cushions/pillows, throws, rugs, lamp & shades etc. Go crazy with the size of the shade, even on a table lamp, you'll be surprised how large you can go. Don't overcrowd the room with the darker colour. Keep it light and accent with the darker colours. Move the furniture away from the walls. You're room will look totally different. Good luck!
